The Courtyard Waterfront in Charleston, SC was a great revelation. Upon checkin, we were worried that it would be too far from the historic district, but the clerks at the front desk showed us a map and gave us several good ways to get closer downtown. The rooms are adorable and our view of the Ashley River was impeccable. The hot breakfast buffet was great and we wished we had ate at the restaurant more often. Overall, the stay was a great value and my wife and I look forward to staying there again.

PROS: We stayed here for 4 nights during a family member's visit to MUSC. Contrary to what other reviewers have said, the location is excellent. Right on the waterfront, 2 minutes to MUSC and various fast food (Arbys, Hardees, McDonalds, Wendys, Taco Bell), 10 minutes to downtown, and 20-30 minutes to beaches. They also offer free covered (and outdoor) parking. If you stay, get a waterfront room for sure. Great view of the marina and a beautiful sunset. The hotel has a nice 2nd floor outdoor veranda, which is great for lounging around. The pool area was pretty clean, but the pool and jacuzzi are in need of refinishing as they have cracks and are aging.

CONS: Now to the bad parts. This hotel is not meeting the Marriott standard that I have experienced elsewhere. This is definitely the worst room I have had at any Marriott chain hotel. The rooms are more like a lower-end Super 8 or Days Inn. We started out in a King room with pullout sofa because that was all that was available, then moved to a 2 bed room the last night. As you can see in the pics, there was mold on the AC vent. Light fixtures, furniture, TV, and bathroom were all greatly outdated, and the mattress on the sofa was badly stained and disgusting. These are not modern rooms like you find at other Courtyard properties. I also had a very hard time finding outlets to charge my computer and phone. Had to unplug lamps to get a free outlet. The hallways have stained carpet and have a very strong smell. The lobby has been remodeled to Marriott standards and is the nicest part of the hotel.

All in all, if you want to stay in the Ashley river area, stay at the Marriott River View. I have also stayed there and it is a much better property.

We wanted to take our 7 year old to Charleston to see the historic sites prior to a week in Hilton Head. My husband and I travel several times a year for work and are Marriott reward members (Silver level each). We did not use points for this stay. The Marriott website describes the hotel as "This upscale waterfront hotel allows you to enjoy breathtaking views of the Ashley River while dining, swimming or relaxing in our water view guest rooms." Our hotel overlooked the garbage cans/view of the highway and many overgrown weeds. The curtain to the balcony was held together with SILVER DUCT TAPE - that had been replaced a few times before. The bathroom wallpaper was peeling and moldy near the left side of the tub and pulling apart on the right side. Above the toilet there were holes where a towel rack used to be. There were no signs indicating "pardon our mess, etc" I have emailed Marriott 3 times with no response regarding my stay. I sent pictures to them of this room - with no response. Pay a bit more and stay at another hotel.

This paticular room was in need of attention. Action was taken as soon as the guest reported the concerns. The Room Attendant and Inspector were placed back into training so other were not disappointed as they were. The room they stayed in is not a good example of the rest of our property. That room indeed overlooks our garbage dumpster area. We try very hard not to use the room as no one really cares to look at that. The hotel was almost sold out the night before their arrival. They requested and early check-in and arrived around 5:00am in the morning. The bathroom picture had been broken by the previous guests and was scheduled to be replaced the day they arrived along with the wallpaper glue. Many other rooms were available to move to that same day. The guest received a formal apology and compensation for their concerns.

Overall we enjoyed this hotel and the price was very good. Pros: spacious, resort-like lobby and surrounding decks, spacious pool, some great views of bay and marina, good breakfast included in price, has quite a few amenities such as free Internet access in business center, fitness center and free daily newspaper, also excellent beds and pretty large rooms. Cons: the big beautiful pool (a major draw for our kids) was dirty and hot! (felt like a bathtub), carpets in bedrooms need a good cleaning (shampooing, not just vacuuming), needs some modernizing (computers in biz center, also TV in room and other decorations in room), only provides the minimum no. of towels and soaps, crushed crackers on the main carpet in our hallway near elevator sat their for two days (kids called it the cracker hall), and staff overall was struggling to be friendly. All said, pretty good -- and much better than comparable "economical" hotels. We also stayed at the Renaissance Marriott in downtown Charleston and it was snooty and old and the pool (in contrast to the misleading photos) was tiny and not relaxing at all.

Visiting this hotel for our wedding anniversary. We are Marriott rewards coustomers and always stay at Marriott hotels because they have a standard of excellence. Although this hotel does have great customer service, the hotel itself is outdated. Our room is smaller than a college dorm room. We have very little outlets to accomodate our cell phones and other electronic devices. Don't be fooled by the lobby, these rooms are very tiny and we both barely fit with our luggage. Also, the noise level is out of this world. The person upstairs sounds like they are walking in my room. Had a thunder storm last night and I thought I was outside. Need some soundproofing and an updated TV would be nice. too! We will be writing the Marriott about this property. Not what you would expect of the Marriott!!!
