“Good stay, great view - room could use an update”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2009

We travelled to Charleston during the peak Fall season and we stayed at this Courtyard for the first time. We got a really great deal on a waterfront room by clicking on the specials on the hotel's official website. We paid $119 for a waterfront room, before taxes and fees. This was a great bargain and we enjoyed having free parking.

We are experienced Charleston travellers and know our local geography so we knew what to expect prior to arriving. The location is perfect for short car trips to the historic district, restaurants and shopping. We enjoyed the marina views and sat out one evening by the lounge/pool and watched the sun set over the Ashley River.

My biggest issue was the room was a little oudated. Everything was clean, just outdated especially the tv. There was a lot of door slamming by guests and the covered parking is limited if you arrive later in the evening.

I would stay here again with the right rate.

I recently stayed here with a group of girlfriends on a weekend getaway. We had specifically requested an early check-in, yet when we arrived around 1 p.m., we went to our room only to unlock the door and find that the previous occupants had not checked out yet. They weren't in the room, but their luggage was. We were promptly given another room and an apology, which less than made up for having to haul our luggage up to the 3rd floor (5 women, so you can imagine just how much luggage that was), back down to the lobby, and back up to the third floor again. We did find, however, that the room was immaculately clean, the beds comfy, and the views of the marina and surrounding marsh were phenomenal. It is quite a hike from the downtown shopping and dining district, however, so you'll want to drive downtown and park (a nightmare). We did find the staff to be very helpful. The little guy at the front desk took photos of us all together, and called a cab for us when we were ready to go out for the evening. The breakfast bar was also excellent. An overall great stay, even with the slow start! Would stay there again.

We almost left Charleston after one night at this Courtyard!

Check in was very slow. We waited almost 10 minutes because there was only one person behind the front desk and he was very unprofessional and slow. He could not answer any questions. None of the staff while we were there were interested in our needs or wants.

Although the hotel is on the water, it is a marina and not very pretty. The pool is outdoors and in full view of all the rooms. Balconies and furniture are dirty. Outdoor furniture around the pool appeared dirty. Parking is free.

The rooms are dingy and not clean. The drapes were dirty and the plastic liners full of holes. My husband and I could not wait to leave. Shame on Marriott for having a hotel like this in their chain.

We spent 1 night here in August. I had a free Mariott room due to getting a credit card and chose this hotel. It was great. I was upgraded to a corner suite with a wrap around balcony overlooking the pool area and the river. Fabulous views. WE had a kitchen area with livingroom, seperate bedroom and nice bathroom.
WE enjoyed the pool at night. We met some other guests who were friendly and it was a great place to relax.
We usually stay downtown in the Historic District. I like to walk around and don't really need a car in Charleston, for this location you really need a car. It is not that far from the Historic District (1 mile) but in order to get to a walking area you need to cross a major highway. I think this would be a great location if you wanted to be close to the main road heading to the Folly Beach area.
The hotel was clean and spacious. WE did not eat there but I did use the business center to print boarding passes.
We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again if we couldn't get a comparable room downtown. I have to say that you really don't "feel " like you are in Charleston here, but it is not far away.

The location of this hotel is great if you like the water. It is right on the Ashley River overlooking the marina. It also appears to be in the direct flight path of migrating birds and the air force. Neither were bothersome to us.
Would I recommend this hotel to a friend? Probably but I would suggest they look at the room first as the motto here is not "Cleanliness is next to ........................".
The room we originally booked was of a decent size and had a balcony like we reqested (not all rooms do) but it was in close proximity to the dumpsters and any view was blocked by a very large tree. I noticed some lint and crumbs on the carpet and figured they would be vacummed up the next day. (we arrived late). In the morning when I looked up I noticed dangling "strings" of dirt from the ceiling. I called the front desk and asked them to inform housekeeping to be sure they cleaned thoroughly that day. I was assured that would happen. IT DID NOT!!!
I went to the front desk personally to discuss the cleaning of the room and the girl at the desk was sorry for the inconvenience and said she would move us to another room. She upgraded us to a better room and we moved ourselves there. Waterview and great view of the sunset in the evening. BUT don't sit on the lawn furniture. YUK!!
The common areas of the hotel are kept very well and cleaned all the time. The pool was sparkling but the rooms as other travelers stated were not cleaned well at all. In the first room because we were still in our room they just hung clean towels on the door and left. They did come back and make the bed when we went out.
Some of the people at the front desk were very customer service oriented but a couple were not and did not speak well of those that were.
Breakfast was the normal buffet or you could order from the menu. No other meals were served from the restaurant. The "bar" is not open every evening. Price in the snack shop are HIGH HIGH HIGH!!
In summary the location is good and we were glad we did not stay downtown but they really need to clean this hotel better and do some updating if they want to stay in the running.
I will be writing to the corporate offices and suggest they read this site and inspect their hotel.

The hotel itself was contemporary, beautiful, and comfortable. The room was very spacious and the beds were extremely comfortable. The piazza area was awesome with numerour conversation groupings of couches, chairs and tables. The swimming pool area as well. HOWEVER...the only food available at the hotel is a nice breakfast buffet. The hotel does not offer lunch or dinner. Rather they rely on a convenience store, "The Market", to sell snacks, candy, drinks, beer, wine, etc. I think this is a good idea for those who are feeling "snackish" but not for an evening meal. The hotel is located on the waterfront next to the highway and the bridge to one of the islands making it unwise to try and cross traffic to walk somewhere. There are no food choices in the immediate vicinity and if you are without transportation you are out of luck, unlike when you stay in the historic district. The hotel does offer transportation to their mother hotel, The Marriott, down the road to eat at their high-priced restaurant. Also, for a fee, you can ride the shuttle to the Waterfront Park and walk to food on E. Bay St. and in the Market area. Or you can have food delivered at ridiculously high minimum order & delivery fees.

We came to Charleston by way of water on our boat. We put in the river in Columbia and sailed all the way down to Charleston and had the best time EVER> Our HOTEL was very PLUSH and we got a GREAT price due to us having such a large group traveling with us. The VIEW was the MOST amazing from our balcony. We could see the whole Ashley Marina which is where we kept our boat docked. We were also walking distance to many great ammenties. We will be back on Labor Day weekend 2009 for another great stay!
