We were surprised with the warm southern welcome at Rosehill from the gate house to the caddie Resturant where we waited until the 1:30 entrance time, The guide in period costume was excellent with details, laughter and historical stories. We learned that she has written a few books. The home is lovely, well furnished and warm. We were allowed to walk on rugs , sit on furniture and take pictures. At the end a lovely lady invited us to sample treats in the elegant dining room. From grits, bar-b-que and bread pudding to relishes and great peach tea! -before being invited to purchase items at the end. We were allowed to walk around at our leisure after the tour. No rush! Well worth the entrance fee!

I went to a "scheduled tour" at the Rose Hill Mansion. They had a wine tasting and light appetizers. The cost was nominal for the tour. Very nice function. This tour was held at night, but they also offer day time tours. Something different!

The chandeliers, the hunt room with all of the taxidermy pieces and especially the hand-made mantle over the fireplace were especially beautiful.

The mansion has been totally restored following a devastating fire. The current owners are constantly bringing in pieces from all over the world to furnish the house. From what our docent told us, the furniture and accessories are bought and sold constantly. If someone on a tour likes anything in the house, they are placed in contact with the owner where they would negotiate on a price.

After the tour, the cook came out and described each one of her buffet items, saying how everyone just raved about her chicken salad, and people still talk about her tuna salad, etc. There was no modesty about her talk and it was a little over the top for us. The buffet included mayonnaise based chicken and tuna salads, pulled pork, grits with cheddar, store bought chips and desserts. Her bread pudding, which she said was everyone’s favorite, was burnt on the bottom. Many of the items on the buffet were either tasteless or just OK. In addition, there was nothing healthy.

Overall, we felt that the tour and the luncheon were pricey at $25 and $15, respectively. This most likely contributes to the owner’s efforts to buy and sell furniture/accessories to maintain the property. There are so many other local historical plantations to visit that are more reasonably priced.

Lovingly restored home, brought to life by current owners.
Very interesting tour with the addition of delicious snacks. Knowledgeable & interesting guide, who could help us imagine life on a plantation back in the day. Lots of history surrond the artifacts on display.

Impressed by the detail that went into recreating this burned out plantation. The owner lives on the premises and takes care to insure its authenticity.
