Owner description: The historic Rose Hill Mansion, known as the most beautiful plantation house in the Low Country, has long held a treasured place in Southern history. Originally built in the late 1850s by planter and physician, Dr. John Kirk and his wife Caroline, the plantation was a wedding present from Caroline's father, James Kirk. Work was halted by the Civil War, and while occupied through the years, the interior was not completed until 1946, when new owners John and Betsy Gould Sturgeon finished it in grand style. In 1980, the Welton family purchased the land and the house was later listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1987, a fire devastated the house & it sat in a state of ruin until purchased and restored by The Middleton White Foundation. After a decade long restoration, the home is now shared with the public each day, via guided history tours. Reservations are required for all tours.

This is a beautiful and fascinating house with a rich and interesting history! I'm not even a history buff but I got reeled in by the hospitality and knowledge of our docent--and by the delicious treats Ms. Pat cooked up for us at the end! :)

We enjoyed the tour on 6-22-17. The tour guide did a great job and we even got to me the owner.
Everything was great but it would have been nice to have had some pictures of the upstairs to get a better idea of what the mansion was like.

Our docent Joan was very knowledgeable, and pleasant. The history of the mansion is fascinating and the restoration of the rooms just beautiful and decorated with artifacts depicting the history of the mansion. We were encouraged to ask questions and to take our time viewing each room. The tour ended in the dining room, where, Pat, the cook had samples of different foods favored in the south. We were also encouraged to enjoy the grounds and revisit any of the rooms we just visited. Definitely would come back with my other family members.

Lovely house with an interesting history. Don't really see any plantations but get to see the house itself which is nicely restored!

My sister in laws and I really enjoyed the tour. Joan was a wonderful guide and Pat served up some delicious snacks. The house is breathtaking and so inviting. You feel like you are an invited guest as opposed to being on a tour.
