Owner description: The historic Rose Hill Mansion, known as the most beautiful plantation house in the Low Country, has long held a treasured place in Southern history. Originally built in the late 1850s by planter and physician, Dr. John Kirk and his wife Caroline, the plantation was a wedding present from Caroline's father, James Kirk. Work was halted by the Civil War, and while occupied through the years, the interior was not completed until 1946, when new owners John and Betsy Gould Sturgeon finished it in grand style. In 1980, the Welton family purchased the land and the house was later listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1987, a fire devastated the house & it sat in a state of ruin until purchased and restored by The Middleton White Foundation. The Mansion is permanently closed until further notice.

My sister in laws and I really enjoyed the tour. Joan was a wonderful guide and Pat served up some delicious snacks. The house is breathtaking and so inviting. You feel like you are an invited guest as opposed to being on a tour.

We had an excellent time with Joan. She was very informative and inviting. The property is breathtaking with the Spanish moss and gorgeous architecture. The only issue was finding it with the directions from the security. Otherwise excellent! Loved the chef pat too!

The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and you can take all the pictures you want before and after the tour. My only complaint is that, though the place was beautifully furnished, it was not furnished witg replicas.

What a wonderful tour of the grande home. Joanne, our guide, was informative and very personable.
It was a treat to have a decent of one of the home owners in our group. We also met the current homeowner. What a beautiful late Spring day at Rose Hill!
