Owner description: The historic Rose Hill Mansion, known as the most beautiful plantation house in the Low Country, has long held a treasured place in Southern history. Originally built in the late 1850s by planter and physician, Dr. John Kirk and his wife Caroline, the plantation was a wedding present from Caroline's father, James Kirk. Work was halted by the Civil War, and while occupied through the years, the interior was not completed until 1946, when new owners John and Betsy Gould Sturgeon finished it in grand style. In 1980, the Welton family purchased the land and the house was later listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1987, a fire devastated the house & it sat in a state of ruin until purchased and restored by The Middleton White Foundation. After a decade long restoration, the home is now shared with the public each day, via guided history tours. Reservations are required for all tours.

This was just the most delightful tour..how many times have you heard, "oh, please sit on the furniture"...and beautiful furnishings there were. And the dessert to all of this...yup, dessert (fantastic bread pudding!) and other homemade delicacies. The cou de gra...Robin, the owner joined us and was just the epitome of "Southern Hospitality!"

It was more lovely than I anticipated. I had herd from others that it was a nice tour, but, my visit exceeded my expectations.

Really enjoyed the history and being able to tour the lower level of the mansion. It takes you back in time.

Wish they had kept the touring group to a minimum; some of the rooms could not accommodate the entire group.

A very interesting tour of the house. The very informative tour guide walked us though the history of the house before and after the fire. The furnishings are wonderful. The owner of the house is very personable. Having refreshments (wine lemonade) and Miss Pat's delectable treats after athe tour were a delightful touch.

I can't think of a BETTER way to spend an afternoon! The history of the plantation was explained in depth by our docent and we even met the mistress of the plantation. So much to learn about this period in history with regard to how people lived before and after the civil war. Beautiful pieces of furniture, clothing and keepsakes that we can learn from even today. I can't say enough about what a beautiful plantation this is and how we enjoyed it!! Don't want to forget about the delicious treats and wine that we received too.
