Owner description: The historic Rose Hill Mansion, known as the most beautiful plantation house in the Low Country, has long held a treasured place in Southern history. Originally built in the late 1850s by planter and physician, Dr. John Kirk and his wife Caroline, the plantation was a wedding present from Caroline's father, James Kirk. Work was halted by the Civil War, and while occupied through the years, the interior was not completed until 1946, when new owners John and Betsy Gould Sturgeon finished it in grand style. In 1980, the Welton family purchased the land and the house was later listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1987, a fire devastated the house & it sat in a state of ruin until purchased and restored by The Middleton White Foundation. After a decade long restoration, the home is now shared with the public each day, via guided history tours. Reservations are required for all tours.

A very good tour guide, and interesting narrative about the house and it's contents.
Also, you get to sample delightful foods at the end of the tour.
Need to book online, for which you also then get a glass of wine on arrival

We decided to visit Rose Hill Mansion as it was on the way to Savannah from Charleston. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and it was really interesting to learn about the history of the house and how it came to its current glory. The rooms are decorated with very interesting historical artefacts and the local food / teas after the tour were delicious.

This attraction was not very close to our resort, but we decided to make a day of it and it was very worthwhile. The guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

Rose Hill Mansion is a stately mansion that was lovingly restored by its current owners who actually live in the mansion. Although the tour price is steep ($25), it was thoroughly enjoyable, interesting and informative. Our very knowledgeable guide Joanne was also lively, humorous and interested in providing guests with the best possible experience. We were never hurried and if you arrived early you could meander through the downstairs rooms and take photographs leisurely (the tour is of the first floor only) and/or do the same after the tour is over. Small samples of several foods were served after the tour and all of the foods were described in detail by the delightful cook. Several food items were available for purchase. Reservations for the tour are required (offered at 2 pm only) and online I found a coupon for a free glass of wine. Be sure to take a look at the restrooms, too!

I am from Charleston and have been on MANY house tours in the south. Rose Hill Mansion tour was different from any tour i've been in on, in a good way! Most tours you can't take pictures or touch anything; from the second you enter the home, you can check out the rooms, sit on furniture, take pictures, and sip a glass of wine. You learn so much about the home, great tour guides. The best part is at the end, when you get to sample southern cuisine, homemade by a chef who KNOWS southern cooking! Great way to enjoy the beauty of the lowcountry, try southern food, learn history, and relax!
