Owner description: The historic Rose Hill Mansion, known as the most beautiful plantation house in the Low Country, has long held a treasured place in Southern history. Originally built in the late 1850s by planter and physician, Dr. John Kirk and his wife Caroline, the plantation was a wedding present from Caroline's father, James Kirk. Work was halted by the Civil War, and while occupied through the years, the interior was not completed until 1946, when new owners John and Betsy Gould Sturgeon finished it in grand style. In 1980, the Welton family purchased the land and the house was later listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1987, a fire devastated the house & it sat in a state of ruin until purchased and restored by The Middleton White Foundation. After a decade long restoration, the home is now shared with the public each day, via guided history tours. Reservations are required for all tours.

Nice history lesson as well as viewing a nicely restored house and furnishings. This is the only Gothic Revival plantation house we have seen. Our tour guide and the local food at the end of the tour were Excellent.

Unique southern mansion and a truly fascinating tour. The tour guide was professional and able to easily answer questions, not just about the building and the families who owned it, but also about the history of the region as it related to this area of the south. The tasty treats offered at the end of the tour were delicious! We not only purchased many of their wonderful condiments but also purchased a book about some of the mansion's ghosts - written and autographed by the lovely and gracious owner, Robin White.

One of the nice things about this tour was that at the end of the hour we were not rushed out, but rather encouraged to go back to each room to more closely examine whatever caught our eye. Mrs. White and many of the staff members were available to answer questions and expand on the stories told during the tour.

We will definitely take this tour again and highly recommend it to travelers and residents alike!

Our tour guide was awesome in her knowledge of the house and its history, but there were a few negatives regarding the tour. First, there were 33 people in our tour, which we felt was at least 13 people too many. Some of the rooms are small and we barely fit into them when she was discussing them. Second, we were unable to see the upstairs. Very disappointing. Finally, the tour ended with a sales pitch from the chef regarding the ingredients and the products she used for the small bites she served at the end of the tour. Fairly expensive at $25.00 per person.

Lovely house. The story of the house is very interesting and the docent did a great job. The owner visited us after the tour and was quite charming. Local snacks were served after the tour whichvwas very nice.

This was a great outing, with lots of useful information, and a lovely meeting with the hostess and host. Very nice little snacks afterwards. Would have loved to see more of the compound...
