“Don't miss the churchyard cemetery”

While the church itself is historic and beautiful, the cemetery in the churchyard deserves some time to stroll though. Many historic figures from the area are there and the monuments and epitaphs convey that.

“One of the quintessential churches of the South”
Reviewed June 9, 2010

From the water, Beaufort's skyline is punctured by two elegant steeples, one of which belongs to the beautiful St. Helena's Episcopal Church. Established in 1712 (one year after Beaufort's founding date), this congregation is the oldest in the community and one of the oldest in America. The church has been renovated four times throughout the years and has a simple yet refined interior space that features a balcony area and a lovely alter.

For many though, the real interest is just outside the doors in the hauntingly beautiful churchyard. Surrounded by an ancient brick wall, the church yard features burial sites dating back to the Revolutionary War. You will see old tombstones and family plot sites along with immaculate landscaping and the occasional flag, signaling if a deceased was of the American, British, or Confederate forces. Legendary Southern names like Rhett, Barnwell, Heyward, and Elliott all were parishioners at St. Helena's.

The church hosts weekly organ concerts in the fall and a tour of homes in spring.
