Step through the door and you come face to face with a steam table loaded with freshly-cooked Southern foods. The day we were there, the choices included pulled pork, ribs, meatloaf, fried and BBQ chicken, and fried whiting. Down-home Southern-cooked vegetable selections and delicious homemade desserts round out the offerings. A truly personable proprietress is right there at the steam table to show off each item and make up your plate for you. If you bend down a bit, you can see a roaring pit fire through an opening in the wall behind the steam table. You pay up front and take your plate off to the left into a charming mid-century dining room. There is absolutely nothing "chain restaurant" or "corporate" about this place. Actually, it seems a little like a hobbit residence. Prices are easy on the wallet. BBQ aficionados have written that they would drive 100 miles to eat here if they had to--yeah, it's THAT good!
