This gem is just off Bay Street in downtown Beaufort, but you could walk right by without realizing it was there. Look for it and have an excellent meal! My group dined on a Friday night, and as others have noted, quiet conversation is challenging. I didn't find this objectionable, but you find yourself repeating things that didn't get through the first time. Nice, comfortable seating and decor, no TV's, lively bar. Service was perfect. Reservations are accepted for some tables; others are left open. This seemed to work well and may be the best of both worlds.

There are very interesting food, beer and wine choices. The menu is printed daily, so you have to see what temptations are being offered that night. Here are opinions from my group: Lamb shank - excellent; Moroccan beef - excellent; pork shoulder - beautifully presented but bland; winemaker salad - excellent; spinach fettuccine - just OK; basil tomato soup - superb.

Looking for different? Give the Old Bull a try.

“Very Enjoyable”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

The convenient location used to have Breakwater before it moved to larger spot a couple of blocks away. It is just off Bay Street with parking right next door. It is chef owned, and the owner sat down for a couple minutes with us at the end of dinner last Saturday night and we chatted about his menu, traffic, etc.

I actually thought the menu was quite extensive and varied for a "tavern", with everything from burgers (one guest with our group raved about the burger) to a very tasty lamb shank. There is a large and attractive bar, where some were eating or just drinking. The wine options were satisfactory and good values. If you want a big wine list go to Breakwater or Saltus. My wife and I shared an excellent salad, 2 entrees, one drink and half bottle of Cote de Rhone for $62 including tip. Given that we had excellent service from our server, Gabriel, this was a very good value.

The only negatives worth mentioning were the scotch on the rocks I ordered seemed like s very small pour (but I don't recall what they charged) and the place was noisy. But hey, it is a tavern and we will return.

“So great to have an EXCELLENT option in downtown Beaufort!”
Reviewed November 1, 2012

We had a wonderful time at the bar with excellent food and interesting cocktail options created by Matthew and delicious wine on tap. The duck confit starter was perfect with the apple jus served over butternut squash puree - just the right amount of crispness and sweetness. The ricotta gnocchi with shrimp and basil and tomato was more than enough for a full meal, but priced as a "middle" and very tasty. And the winemakers salad was the best thing my hubby has ever tasted!

The service was top rate, the staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the menu (Matthew is the manager) and even the area (Ryan is the rare Beaufort native). The decor is warm and welcoming, although it does need something out front to let you know that the tavern actually exists.

The prices are great! We'll definitely be recommending it to friends and be frequent visitors. Job well done!!

“old bull”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

this is a relatively new restaurant and i chose it for my birthday dinner and i'm glad i did. relatively small menu but more than enough to choose from - we shared the lamb shank and the chicken and sausage entree - both were delicious and i even had enough to bring home. a neighbor was there and pronounced the tiramisu heavenly. lovely decor, decent wine list, full bar - all in all a dining experience we enjoyed and will revisit.
