The history of this lighthouse is very interesting. You can climb to the top where the view is amazing!!!! It is manned by very friendly volunteers.

We were in Beaufort and decided to drive over to the lighthouse. You have to pay $5 each to enter the park and its another $2 to climb to the top. When you go inside the lighthouse be sure to look up and see the spiral staircases, its spectacular. Be sure to wear a coat as was chilly inside yesterday.
The gift shop is not open in the winter so if you want a souvenier you will have to go to to another office which is in another area of the park.
Once you enter the park.....the drive to and from the lighthouse is on a narrow road and the vegetation is dense, very different for us who live in Alberta Canada.

Great lighthouse and you can climb to the top for an unreal view of the lowcountry. Don't miss this.

If you are a lighthouse fan, don't miss this one. It is inside the park which you have to pay to get in ($5 each) but it is worth it, especially if you take advantage of the whole park. We went to see just the lighthouse and the only disappointment was that we could not climb it due to repairs being done. It is not directly on the water but very close to a gorgeous beach. The lighthouse itself is black and white and 264 steps. It's very picturesque and has a small gift shop which was closed at the time (off season). We did not have time to explore the park but there are amazing trails and the pond near the visitor center is home to a few alligators. Leave the park and take a left to go to the pier and the nature center. The marsh walk is also nice and you can see a great sunset.

This lighthouse is off the beaten path in Hunting Island State Park and is a small walk in right off the beach. If you climb to the top of the lighthouse you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the South Caroline coast.
