“Great Hotel by The Ocean for Families”
Reviewed May 24, 2011

Crowded, noisy, adjacent to the beach. The ocean is only a hundred yards away down the boardwalk.

An attractive brand new hotel, and great for families, but I am not sure how well it will wear long-term.
I'd say it was an excellent four star category with its 49 rooms/suites, and additional one to two bedroom residences for rent through ther hotel.

Be aware that there are ONLY four full-on, stunning ocean view accomodations -- 201 (atlantic suite), 215, 301 and 315.

The website makes it look like there are lots of direct ocean views rooms - not true - you might have to walk out onto your balcony and crane your head to the left in order to see the ocean and not just the neighboring homes.

If you are going to ask for a good bay view, try to get one on the 3rd floor. Ask for 310, 312, 314 or 316

Most incredibly comfortable bed I have ever slept on.

Fabulously comfortable vanishing edge jacuzzi tub. But the towels were shockingly small, thin and rough.

Nice to have the gas firelpace that flips on with a switch, and the flat screen tv.

Bathrobes were soft but only one size and far too small and short. They need to order larger sizes for women, let alone for men - if you are anything bigger than a women's size 8, forget it!

A/C was efficient. There is free wifi. I

Housekeeping was very nice and so were all the other employees.

Room service breakfast was great. Dinner at Seasons was very good too.

Maintenance of the hotel grounds is a bit sloppy - trash was by the beach shack, chairs are stacked up on the lawn by the boardwalk and remained so for a few days, chairs were stacked up in the hallway by our room, the elevator smells a bit stuffy and strange, etc.

The famous Mansions at Newport are only an hour's drive away, so that is a nice day trip.

Room Tip: 210, 215, 301, 315 or 310, 312, 314, 316

Dear Guest,
We appreciate you taking the time to give us your feedback. Many more of our rooms than the ones you listed offer beautiful views of the water, and we describe the remainder as offering partial water views, and we have made every attempt to make sure our website reflect this. We apologize for the unsatisfactory maintenance. This past month has been our transition into summer, which requires us bring back out summertime furniture, and prepare the beach. We will share your comments in regards to the rooms internally.
Kind Regards,

This property is truly amazing. Just beautiful. I can't imagine how nice it would be if the sun were out. I met a friend from Boston for an overnight girls weekend and we had a great time. I kept thinking oh my gosh they have not missed a thing here, everything is well thought out and very well executed. The decor is to die for, seriously, who decorated this place. The guest room carpets are wool. The food is amazing. It is an old world property with every modern convenience including a hair salon open on Sunday and an indoor lap pool. A couple of my favorite people.. Linda, the hairstylist. I am always just a little nervous when I hand my tresses over to someone outside of a big city. Linda is talented and a true professional. And Patrick, the driver who took me to the station. A lovely, personable man who loves his job and it shows. The last person you see is one of the most important!!
Arrive early book spa appointments, swim and be sure to book dinner reservations.
Well done!

Dear Guest,
We appreciate your kind words in regards to your visit to the Ocean House. The interior space was designed by Boston based designer Peter Niemitz. It is great to hear when we are able to exceed expectations, and give our guests a memorable experience. We hope you visit us again.

We stayed mid week in April. The property is absolutely gorgeous. The room was fantastic; the bed was comfortable and the huge open bathroom had a large stand up shower with a separate super deep bath tub. The lobby, restaurant, spa, and gym were spotless. Breakfast was incredible, the breakfast staff was superb, and the view was amazing. Afternoon tea and cookies in the lobby was very nice. Great that fruit and bottled water were provided in the gym/spa. For the most part, the service was excellent through out the hotel.

Since the weather was nice and Easter was that coming Sunday, we were surprised that the grounds were not prepared for spring. The gardens did not reflect the season with daffodils or tulips. The exterior entrance area should have had some signs of spring.
The walkway to the beach had some damaged lights and a sitting bench was knocked over on its side. The lawn behind the property is unattractive with a dusty dirt driveway. I know that it was early in the season, but it would have been nice to see the grounds a little more manicured.

A light menu at the lounge is served for lunch but the seating is limited. (Lunch in main restaurant over at 2:30) We sat at the bar and asked if it was possible to prepare a simple salad with a grilled chicken breast sliced over it. The waiter did get it for us but he seemed intimidated to ask the chef for such an “unusual” request.

All in all, it was a great stay. We really enjoyed the property and we absolutely loved breakfast. We look forward to returning in the summer when the lawns and gardens are better maintained and in full bloom.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for visiting us again. We are glad you were able to stay with us this time around, and fully experience the Ocean House. Unlike other areas of the country, in New England spring begins in May. Mid-May daffodils bloomed for the first time, and the landscape began to slowly turn green. Now that nature is returning to life, we are tending to our grounds to make them once again pristine, and well manicured. We offer a limited menu at the lounge between the hours of lunch and dinner since it is the time the kitchen is turning over for the evening service. During summer, more dining options will be offered with the seasonal opening of the Verandah, Seaside Terrace, and Dune Cottage. We appreciate your feedback, and look forward to welcoming you once again this summer.

My mother and I came to Watch Hill to attend the funeral of a family member. We stayed
Easter night. We had made the reservation a few days earlier and requested early check - in. We were told that someone would call us to discuss the early check in. No one called. When we arrived at the hotel at 2PM, our room was not ready. We were told that it would be ready in about an hour. We went into the dining room and had lunch.
At 4PM (the regular check in time) the room was still not ready! We expected better from
what is supposed to be a premium hotel. I gather from other reviews, that this is not the first time this has happened. We requested use of a telehone to inform our family that we were not yet checked in, it turned out that the only telephone available cannot be used by non - residents. We waited about 15 minutes more before the room was ready.
The room was very comfortable but the beds are very high and a bit lumpy on one side.
There is a stall shower and a very large and deep tub if you like that sort of thing. The towels are not fluffy and somewhat thin. Bathroom supplies are from Moulton Brown, but they must be the economy versions.
When we checked in, the bell person asked us what time we would like the room turned down for the evening. We indicated 8PM as we expected to be out at time. When we arrived back at the room after 9:15, the room had not been turned down. Sometime later,
a card appeared under the door, claiming that the housekeeping staff had attempted to clean the room intimating that it was our fault that the turn down had not been done. In first class hotels, when this happens the housekeeper usually calls the room and asks if we still want it turned down. But I guess that was too much trouble.
The hotel is beautiful and is really the only luxury option in Watch Hill so I would probaly stay there again but it appears that the management has a way to go before it can be considered for an "Excellent Rating".

Dear Guest,
We appreciate your honest feedback. Please accept our sincere apologies in regards to the miscommunication of your check-in. We do not call guests to discuss early check- in nor do we offer guests a promised time for when the room will be ready due to the unpredictability of the rate at which people check out and rooms will be turned and ready for new arrivals, especially on sold out holiday weekends such as Easter. We will certainly review with our staff the way in which we communicate that to our guests and I apologize for the confusions. Our check-in time is at 4 p.m., and we apologize if the room was not ready. Our staff works hard to have rooms ready at this time; while it was a very busy weekend, it is no excuse, and we are working on hiring more staff to assure that this does not happen again. We are sorry you did not receive turndown service; we will address this internally as it is not acceptable. We hope you choose to stay with us again, in spite of this.
Kind Regards,
Daniel Hostettler, Managing Director

The Ocean House has spared no expense in creating an elegant, understated and opulent retreat on the beach. No detail goes unnoticed, and the level of service is deserving five star accolades. The rooms are incredibly comfortable, clean, luxurious and well-appointed. Our terrace room had a very large private deck overlooking the ocean - the perfect spot to relax and take in the sound of the ocean while having a glass of wine. The very deep marble soaking tubs are comfortable and ideally situated near a shuttered pass-through to let you look out to the outdoor views.

Our visit to the OH! Spa was well worth the money, and left us ready to take a nice long walk on the beach. The salt water pool near the spa is open 24 hours a day, and is a great spot to take in the views as well when the french doors are open to the hotel's lower level terrace.

If you live near Boston or Providence, this is an amazing hotel that you should check out immediately!

Having just returned from a week-end at the Ocean House, we were delighted with our stay. I wanted to get away from NYC for my birthday and go somewhere new where I could treat myself. Having a "deadbeat" for a husband (kidding), I made all the arrangements and simply told him where we were going.

We had never heard of the Ocean House and had no expectations whatsoever when we arrived on Friday night. We were immediately impressed by the welcoming. Everyone knew it was my birthday (reception, dining area, spa) and there was a thoughtful birthday card in our room.

Another nice surprise was that all snacks and beverages in the room were complimentary and that all tipping was included in your room fees except when dining. This really allows you to have a "forget your wallet" couple of days.

We didn't know anything about the restaurant and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and attentiveness of the staff. We were lucky enough to sit at the open kitchen counter from where we watched the chef and his crew work their magic. A small example of their attentiveness was replacing a salad I was saving for my next course by a fresh one when that course came out. The waiter was very friendly. We were presented with an additional appetizer course (birthday probably) and truly enjoyed the show. As non drinkers, our overall dinner bill was reasonable.

We had opted for a special "springtime" package which included breakfast and were very pleased with that decision. Breakfast was delicious both days.

We were impressed by the renovation and the attention to detail (and yes, I asked about the gorgeous wallpaper in the lobby's ladies room and was told that it was custom-designed for the hotel!)

Our room was spacious and extremely comfortable (great bed!)

The Spa was great. Thumbs up on the relaxation room, I could have spent the entire day there.

Only negatives: we weren't able to get a later check out time. And the steam room in the men's spa was out of order. That said, the staff welcomes you to stay on the property past check out time for as long as you wish and use all the facilities.

Fantastic week-end getaway, we would go back next week-end if we could!

Side note: our old Subaru and we, were treated every bit as well as the Audi, BMW & Porsche crowd...

Our second visit to the Ocean House, this time for a girls getaway for several days.
I grew up in the area and have watched the construction for years, and longed to go back and sit on that amazing side porch with a cocktail!
First of all, this hotel sits on one of the worlds most beautiful and endless beaches which is stunning all year long. The walking here is unsurpassed.
The hotel staff is so welcoming and friendly, I want to particularly mention of our room valet, all the valet parking guys, restaurant hostess, and the new sommalier.
The food and service was so amazing that we had no interest in leaving the hotel to try other restaurants. We spent a little time in the spa which is brilliant. I am anxious to see how the hotel runs in high season, and am not sure I want to see the hotel bursting with people, though it surely deserves! I will be back with family for Mothers Day Brunch, congratulations to everyone, and thank you for so warmly welcoming Java! You have managed to make a luxury hotel welcoming, cozy and comfortable in every way.
