“In need of renovation”
Reviewed July 9, 2014

My girlfriend and I were going to eat at another restaurant and found it closed for the holiday. Driving down Post Road we saw Gillian's Ale House and since I like my beer we decided to try it. When we walked in the place smelled old and musty. We sat at a booth and eventually the bartender/waitress came over and took our order. She brought our drinks but was busy on her cell phone for a long while before she came to take our food order. We ordered Quesadillas which were very good and full of ingredients. My entrée which was a steak, came medium well instead of medium rare and the broccoli was like mush, the mashed potato was good. My date had a taco salad that she said was very good.

“Just another pub...”
Reviewed June 4, 2014

This pub is near our home so we tried to make it a regular place to visit. However, the place is not the most consistent when it comes to food and beverage. The draft beer is not always as cold as it should be and the mixed drinks are inconsistent when it comes to alcohol and mixer levels. On one trip there, my wife and i ordered a calamari appetizer. Upon it's arrival to the table, I noticed a very pungent fishy smell. I took a sample bite and immediately knew that the seafood was not fresh, if not already spoiled. I motioned to the waitress and told her my concern that if she were to serve this to other patrons, someone could fall ill. She said she would bring another order for us. When she brought the "new" order back, it was obvious to us that the cook just threw our original order back into the fryolator for a few more minutes. Unacceptable at any level. If you like it loud and congested at night, this is the place to be. Otherwise, I may just stay home an have a beer by the firepit.

“Second visit, now I'm hooked”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

OK, it's not the most glamorous place on earth. In fact, if you head over after sundown it may be hard to find as it is not too well lit, but once inside, everything changes. This lively meeting place for the after work gathering, or for watching the big game, for girls or guys nithgt out, or just to get together with friends, is among the very best around. the food will far exceed your expections. they have superb calamari, and in a state where Calamari is the official State Appetizer, that's saying something. their burgers are char broiled and delicious, and their sandwich and wrap selections will satisfy everyone's palate. The drinks are large and very reasonably priced. So go, where what you are wearing, and head over to Gillians for a fun night out.

“Inconsistent food, very noisy, doors left open....”
Reviewed September 28, 2013

Me and 6 other people tried Gillian's on a Friday night. Strange set up for a restaurant....main dining room has cramped seating and a large bar. The other side has some seating and pool tables with a "dumpy" feel to it. One door was left open next to a pool table and the cigarette smoke was evident in the dining area. We asked to have it closed, which it was. But even after being seated in the main dining area, you could still smell some smoke and realized as we were leaving that the front door was wide open, with the smokers outside that door letting the smoke in. In this day and age, why is this even allowed to happen?
Anyway, on to the food. Two of us ordered 2 different kind of burgers and those diners were pleased with their selections. My husband ordered the pastrami sandwich which he considered to be delicious. A friend ordered the shephard's pie and was happy with the flavor and the large portion. Three of us had the grilled reuben. The flavors were very good, especially the corned beef. The problem was that the corned beef, while tasty, seemed to be chopped up instead of in slices and the sandwich kept falling apart while one was eating it. The side dishes (fries, onion rings, sweet potato fries) were all well prepared and hot upon arrival.
The service was very good and our server was pleasant and accommodating. It was busy when we came and she gave attentive service. It also seems to be a good place to watch a game, but very difficult to have a conversation as the music was much too loud.
Good place for a beer and a casual meal; suggestions: get rid of the pool tables for more dining space, keep the doors closed because of the incoming cigarette smoke, and lower the music. And please, slice the corned beef instead of hacking it up into small pieces.
