On a recent visit to Rhode Island to spend time with family, we drove out to see the lighthouse and buy some fresh caught lobsters in Galilee. A busy weekend day with lots of people in the area, there was still lots of room in the parking (be careful of the potholes,) area. Great picture area and the rocky beach lends itself to making rock towers. A bonus on our trip was watching the rebuilt Morgan whaler on its first sea trail in 80 years-a tall ship, watching it gracefully round the point on the trip from Mystc to Newport was a treat.

If you're an avid surfer you've probably heard of this break, the waves are really nice though it is very rocky so be careful! The water is relatively clear, and during low tide you can see a lot of horseshoe crabs. Most people come here for the view, you can see Narragansett and Newport and the Newport Bridge. I wouldn't recomend swimming here as the rocks are very slippery.

A beautiful lighthouse on the coast guard grounds. Visitors are usually welcome to walk around the grounds. Nice photo opportunities. Nice place for a picnic at the park right near the lighthouse.

On our way back from Newport we took a detour to Point Judith lighthouse and Scarborough Beach a couple miles up the road. The rugged coastline was just gorgeous, and one or two intrepid surfers were enjoying the heavy surf. The lighthouse itself was not the most interesting or stunning we have ever visited, but it was still worth the side trip for the natural beauty of the area on a gorgeous, sunny, early spring day.
Scarborough Beach really impressed us, especially the way that Rhode Island has thought of tourists and created a great parking and new, clean pavilions for showers, changing, food concessions. The beach itself was deep, and the water sparkling - but rough on the day we visited.

This lighthouse was a neat little stop during a day down in Rhode Island. It was only about 15-20 minutes from the URI campus (our final destination for the day) so we decided to check it out beforehand.

The drive there was relatively easy and it was neat to see the lighthouse pop into view as you drive down the road. It is still a US Coast Guard station, so you basically park right next to the Coast Guard house on site. You can walk up to the lighthouse but can't go in. However, it is definitely still a cool site to see. We even rocked a little along the rocky shoreline to take in a couple different views of it. It was one of the few lighthouses I found in that area that was open to the public, so I would definitely recommend it if you are down there!
