I've been going to this beach every year since 1986. Compared to going North (e.g. York Bach, Hampton Beach, Old Orchard Beach), you definitely notice the difference in water temperatures.

Also, often times there are nice waves to either board, bogie or body surf on.

Coming from Mass, you'll find traffic to be a breeze. Something that can't be said of the Cape.

Unlike Newport, Narragansett is a lot less of a commercial spot. However, if you are looking to get a drink after a day on the beach Narragansett offers the Coast Guard House and Almalfi w/in walking distance from the surf.

As mentioned in the other reviews, the beach is long so if you have a family and wanna spread out you can head down the beach a bit and find some open real estate.

The one drawback is parking. 'Gansett does offer a parking lot but it does fill up early. Luckily for me, I stay across the street from the break wall and don't have to worry about that :)

In terms of New England, Narragansett Town Beach can compete with any beach on Cape Cod. The beach is long - nearly a mile long from the Sea Wall to Narrow River - and has fine, light sand. The view of "the Tower" makes for a great backdrop. From the southern tip of the beach, the Beavertail Lighthouse in Jamestown as well as the Newport Bridge are viewable. Once summer rolls around, the beach is packed, even on weekdays.

In terms of comparing Narragansett Beach to beaches all over the country, its downsides are lack of available parking on crowded days, chilly waters that hardly warm up, and weather that often does not consistently cooperate until late June. However, the facilities are beautiful, and while the beach's tourist quotient has increased in recent years, Narragansett Beach retains a comfortable feel.

It's a beautiful place to go. The beach is just divine! During the season even though the weather was not the best, there was a lot of people! skim boarding, that is what I had done for the first time there! crystal, pure water. Local bands playing the music in the park right next to the beach. Lots of shops around the town! Friendly people! and great waves! Close to Providence and Newport. It's just a little paradise 3 and a half hours from New York City!!!

My experience of Narragansett Beach in September has left me longing for more. The area is, in my opinion the most beautiful in New England. We stayed at the Village Inn which was a more than comfortable accomodation. The view from the balcony was unforgettable. Also, a dinner at the Coast Guard House is an absolute must. I have already begun my plans for next year.
