“Location, Location but needs updating”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2009

We have been going to Pleasant View for years now. The location is great but the place itself is old and needs updates. Also, there are no elevators so be ready to carry your luggage up 2 or 3 flights of stairs. While it is clean, there were a couple of insects in our room - only saw them at night though. The plumbing is not up to par. Our shower went from scolding to freezing cold throughout the duration of taking a shower. It also was very hard to stand in it - must have had some type of "bath fitter" done to it and was very uneven on the floor of the shower - not great for keeping your balance. While we did let the front desk know about the problem with the water temperature, no one ever acknowledged the problem. The positives - the ocean view is wonderful and sounds great, and the food is very good as well. Great frozen drinks, though a tad pricey for the size of them. I would recommend it for a long weekend but don't expect any frills or fancy atmosphere.

My sister and I have been going to the PV Inn for about 7 years, and we absolutely enjoy our stay every year. We've never had a bad or unclean room (over the years, we stayed in various rooms throughout the hotel). We found the rooms clean and tidy, although perhaps a little outdated (but what the heck, I'm there for the view and the beach!), but very comfortable. There were plenty of pillows (about 8 in the room, total) and plenty of place to put our belongings. No mini-fridge is included, but we bring an electric cooler which keeps everything nice and cold for five days (and nobody has said anything to us yet about this). We bring breakfast and lunch so our only expense is dinner. The bathroom was very clean and there were tons of towels (nice big fluffy towels!). The main bathroom light was a bit dim, which was great if one of us got up in the middle of the night; it wouldn't wake the other up; and there is a very bright light over the sink. TV worked fine, but we didn't try the DVD player (if someone had trouble with TV, perhaps the DVD was turned on; that will distort the picture). I only wish there had been a channel guide; but we've been going so many years, we written down which channels and positions we like to watch. We usually have dinner in the hotel at least once, and we enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and not being "hurried" over dinner. It's pricey, but the food is well worth it. The front desk staff always greeted us with a smile, and the best feature I have yet to find anywhere else is to make a reservation for next year. I wholeheartedly recommend the Pleasant View Inn; it's a wonderful value with an unbeatable proximity to the ocean.

My husband and I have been enjoying the PVI for 35 years now and enjoy it more and more every year! The food is fabulous and we look forward to eating every meal there. The nice thing about the PVI is that once you park your car, one never has to leave the premises! We always get an oceanfront room with balcony on one of the upper levels so what more can one ask for???!!! The rooms are clean, comfortable and fit the bill for a wonderful, relaxing vacation at the beach! The housekeepers are the best and always willing to accommodate. The sound of the surf at night is the best so no need to pack our "sound machine". The restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner is first class and the prices are very reasonable. We like to make the trip to the PVI twice a year....it's a great place to relax, eat, drink, walk and rest! It's fabulous, believe me!

When it comes to RI beach lodgings in this area, there are no chains like Hilton or Marriott. Dont even try to find one. All the lodgings are family or locally owned.
We have tried many and chose this one in what they call"off season" the week before Memorial Day. Only a few restaurants are open and its super quiet.
PVI gave us a rate of 107 for an ocean view/queen bed room with balcony.
There are no elevators but three levels or rooms. Room is totally spartan, but clean. No phone. No fridge. No complimentary shampoo or hair dryer. There is a TV, cable, DVD player. The bath is basic but good sized with nice towels. The little balcony had two chairs and a small table looking out on the most beautiful view. Below us was well kept grass with complimentray lounge chairs and tables. The beach is private for guests. It was fabulous.
The PVI restaurant and bar wasnt open yet but we walkedup to the next hotel (very short walk) sat outside and had a fabulous meal.
Then the PVI has an outdoor pool with rooms surrounding that and they all have little balconies too.
So this place is really a nice on-the-beach, family run, well-kept, good location, motel/hotel spot. Very nice staff and comfy open lobby.
Those that didnt like PVI probably wanted resort amenities, an elevator, hairdryer and complimentary shampoo. Remember, you're at the beach in RI ----

Well, if you're willing to pay a lot of money for the location, i.e. being right on the beach, then this place is for you. Otherwise, not a place I would recommend. It's one thing for the rooms to be small and dated, quite another not to maintain them properly. Our door squeaked like crazy (which is a problem when you try not to wake up children) -- just a little grease wouldn't have changed the 19th century character of the hotel. The TV didn't work (well, kind of did, but you couldn't make out the picture). The mattress on one of the beds was making very loud noices every time you moved.

There are some nice things about the hotel (other than location). The staff seemed friendly and willing to help, the pool is nice, internet in the lobby, decent restaurant (although rather slow service).

I was very pleasantly surprised after reading some of the less then rave reviews on here. I was traveling with my 6 year old daughter, last minute trip, only wanted beach front. (I am also VERY picky usually - but I needed a place fast). I called the Inn directly (all the websites said they were 100% booked), since we were booking in the same week, and they had some cancellations, we got a great deal. We wanted to stay 2 nights - the front desk told me we would have to change rooms for the 2nd night. ok - fine. Once we got there, we immediately got into our room ( hours early I might add with no call ahead) - had a nice beach front with a balcony room. It was a small room, the furniture was dark and dated, the bathroom tiny - no outlets in the bathroom - BUT, the place was VERY VERY clean, tons of towels, comfy beds, guests were quiet even though the place was packed. The restaurant was very good ( long wait for the food though) - the bar was really good - loved all the food and the breakfast was amazing, and very reasonably priced. Great very warm clean pool that my daughter and her friends loved.
After the first night - we were suppose to get moved to a NON beach front - which did not make us happy, but we know this was the deal. The front desk said "lets see if we can get you something better then this" and sent us to a BEACH FRONT room ( just a little smaller then the first one) , for a lower price then the first night - ok, it had no balcony per se, but you could walk out the door and sit right there facing the beach.
The staff was so helpful, when I was stressing about trying to move all our stuff into second room ( we were going to be out all day) the woman at the front desk said " no worries - housekeeping will move you, just have it all packed"....
and that was that - check out was painless as well -
I wish I had taken some room photos -- really - they are not bad - just remember that this is a BEACH FRONT hotel - it's very beachy - it's NOT the Ritz, but it is very well run, great helpful staff and so so clean. The beach is PERFECT PERFECT - but bring chairs, they don't rent them out.
It's dated, the rooms are small, the hallways dark - but it's a great safe place - we walked to some restaurants and shopping late in the evening and felt 100% at ease (with a 6 year old).
We are already making plans for a return trip for july 2009.

From staying at other hotels in the area, we knew not to expect too much. We were there for the beach and the swimming. When we found ourselves surrounded by jellyfish, we decided to bail - calling it quits after 2 nights. I let them keep the third night because it was obvious they had no intention of compensating us for our disappointment. The jellyfish were no surprise to the front desk. I'd like to know why no one mentioned it and there were no signs. The same goes for every other hotel on the beach.

Because this was last minute, I agreed to a "partial ocean view" - more like partial *restauraunt* view. Sure we could see the ocean if we didn't mind the awkwardness of sitting there looking at people eating breakfast, lunch or dinner. We were also next to the arcade and entrance to dining on the other side. Another reason for bailing was lack of sleep due to all the noise.

  • Disliked — room faced restaurant
