“Breezeway Resort, Maria's Suites...Location, Location”
Reviewed September 12, 2011

We've stayed at the Breezeway a few times before, although always at the accommodations on Winnepaug Road which are a few short blocks to the beach (walk on Montauk Avenue not Winnepaug as the latter has significant traffic). The resort's Winnepaug Road facilities are extensive, quiet, grassy and full of old growth trees. The rooms are well appointed and they offer a swimming pool for beach-weary children and their parents. This year we decided to try Maria's Suites for a couple of reasons: they are just across the street from the beach and the 4-5 rooms/suites are above one of the more popular fine dining spots on the beach.

We chose the Queen room at $249 per night since we would be spending most of our time at a relative's home nearby. The room had 2 Queen beds and a small bathroom. The room was comfortable although far from luxurious. The furnishings were dated although the beds were quite comfortable. Two old fashioned ceiling fixtures provided light for the room. The flat screen TV had cable reception and more than met our needs. The bathroom was small and very basic: very small shower, toilet, sink, small shelf for toiletries (mine) and a small mirror. There were no mirrors in the room which made blowing hair dry difficult because the bathroom was so small.

There was a sliding screened window in the room but because there was a walkway outside leading to another room, we could not leave the window open at night and fall asleep to sound of waves breaking on the beach which is one of the great pleasures of being beach side. The room had an air conditioner which worked fine.

I like the Breezeway because it is one of the few established places on the beach with a reputation for family clientele rather than noisy singles. I did, however, expect that Maria's would be a bit more modern and luxurious for the money. Don't get me wrong, there wasn't anything wrong with the room....but there wasn't anything special about it either -- other than the location.

Parking is behind the restaurant and there is designated parking for hotel guests. One parking permit per room, although if there were more drivers, I think we could have negotiated an additional permit. For those who stay at the Winnepaug Road facilities, the Breezeway provides complementary parking in its own lot right on the beach....a very nice feature for folks with kids and lots of beach chairs, toys and things.

Room Tip: Talk with the reservations clerk and ask about room location. Ask in advance if there is a room with...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review and for chosing to stay with us over the years.

In regards to your room located at what we call Maria's Suites. As you said, the location (across from the beach) and atmosphere is much different than our main property which is located 3 blocks back and with a park like setting. Each location has its advantages and disadvantages I suppose. The room you stayed in was room # 403 which actually was renovated in the winter of 2009. I'm sorry you weren't 100% satisfied with it and I hope we can make sure you are 100% satisfied next time. Room 403 was renovated in 2009. Without knocking down walls of course, everything in the unit is new, including the furniture. The furniture we selected has a "pottery barn / cottagey" feel to it and in some cases it may have an antique appearance. I will definitely install another mirror in the room for the 2012 season.

Thanks again and Happy Holidays!

We knew out of the gate this was not going to be the trip we thought it was. We arrived thursday afternoon and was very pleased with the cleanliness of our room and that it was so large...Large enough that it could have had queen size beds ( this is becoming a pet peeve of mine) The resort is very park like and well taken care of. I think this is a perfect place for larger groups to gather for a vacation.. I don't know if there was enough for my small family. Yes I will return .. I have a credit after being evacuated a day early due to Hurricane Irene. We were celebrating our 10 year anniversary and got in contact with a local photographer ( sara's photography) to do some family shots on wtch hill...she did an amazing job...we were very pleased.

Thanks for your comments and for attempting a vacation during Hurricane Irene. Unfortuanately we had to evacuate but thankfully we had no damage whatsoever.

Regarding the bedding. I agree with you 110% on the Queen / Double comment. We recently upgraded to Simmons Westbury Plush II matresses. My mistake was not upsizing to Queen beds where there was ebough room. It didn't occur to me until it was too late. For next time however, ask for room # 210. This particular room does have 2 queen beds and doesn't cost any more. Of course we also have king beds as well.

Thanks again and we hope to see you in 2012.

We wanted a last minute weekend trip to the coast and were lucky to find this place. While it was a little pricey - we booked last minute and they allowed us to stay two nights instead of the three night minimum - and thier prices were comparable to the area. We were looking for an area on the beach - and while this is not - they have beach front property with free parking and a bathroom right at the beach - you can walk if you want (.3 miles). The "resort" is very well kept and the grounds are nice. They have lounge chairs, table and chairs, fountains and beautiful landscaping through out the property. The have a sun deck by the pool (in additon to pool side seating) and a small playground for littler ones. The staff was very friendly, exceptionally friendly if you ask me, they went out of their way to accommodate us. We arrived two hours early and were allowed to check in, they helped with directions and questions, all with a smile. Breakfast is your typical continental breakfast, and was nice to have. The rooms are on the small side, but we were barely in them - my only complaint about our stay is that they need a place to hand up towels after you come back from the beach. They don't allow you to hang them onthe railing -and with a family of four - the two chairs outside the room were not enough to hang towels on to dry. They do have a washer and dryer on site, but they were always being used when I went to use them. They have a bathroom near the pool and an outside shower to rinse off from when we came back from the beach - this was very helpful (they also have a place to spray down at the beach). My main concern about rooms near the beach is always the potential for smelly rooms - no smell here - very clean rooms - recently renovated I believe.
The area is slightly touristy - allowing you to get food and boogie boards on the beach - but not so touristy that it was overcrowded - about a mile or two down the road we went putt-putting and go karting with the kids and took a day trip into Newport, RI and went on the Cliff Walk and toured a mansion (highly recommend you doing this!) and then on our way home spent a night at Foxwoods Casino - so this is a great area with a lot of things to do (we didn't go to Mystic or Block Island - but both are not far away)...and the restaurant Maria's - is fabulous! We have very picky eaters in our family - and we all loved it - we ate there both nights! We are very glad we "discovered" this place and will definitely go back!

We visited at the end of August, mid-week. As a previous reviewer posted, this motel is overpriced and would be in serious trouble if a decent chain decided to set up shop. Grounds were clean and the "breakfast" was relatively simple: bagels, cereal, coffee. Good coffee there was a charge for though. Bottled drinking water, charge. Room was seriously out dated and overpriced for what you got. Westerly was kind of a dreary shore town. Not much going on. Save your money, head to Newport or Middletown, much better bang for the buck.

We stayed here for 2 days with our 3 children and were very impressed. We booked a king suite (separate BR with king-size bed, living room with pullout sofa, whirlpool bath). First impressions: meticulous grounds, clean pool, beautiful modern suite (we had room 128), liked that they had a small climber outdoors for the kids on the grounds. We got there early (noon) and check-in is not "officially" until 3, but our room was ready (spotless) and they let us check in early. (I've never been to a hotel that allows THAT before.)
We quickly unpacked and headed to the beach. Private parking right on the beach (free), there is a small, clean bathroom just for Breezeway guests where you can change your clothes, etc. with an attendant. You can rent beach umbrellas (we did) and beach chairs, too. The beach was great, even considering Hurricane Irene had just been through a few days earlier.
Later, we got a listing of local places to dine from the front desk, then enjoyed a nice evening sitting out on the deck of our suite when we returned. (We did share our deck with the family next door but didn't mind, and we were informed of this when we were researching the rooms online) In the morning, we headed over for breakfast... nice assortment of muffins, bagels, a few cereals, milk, OJ and coffee (all very fresh, I might add).
We checked out at 11:00 but were provided with "paper" bracelets (we had rubber ones to wear while we were checked in) and were able to once again enjoy their private beach for the remainder of the day. Our entire family enjoyed the accommodations, the staff, the beach. We will definitely be going back, but for a longer stay!
P.S. We booked this room online, and when asked about how many adults/children, it showed us what our rate would be before we confirmed the reservation. It was very easy and straight-forward, so I'm not sure why other people who have reviewed here had a problem understanding the rates.

Room Tip: Our room had a view of the

First time I went was over 25 years ago and everytime I return it is better and better. Very clean and they make everything easy. They have a private beach and PARKING with a restroom. Very easy to just drive up, park and go. Breakfast is good, so is the coffee and it"s included. Discount at their restaurant which was very good.
The pool and grounds were spotless.

We booked a room the day before our short 2 day vacation. They were very helpful suggesting room accomodations. We were able to check in early the day we arrived and spent the afternoon on their private beach. Loved that there was a clean, for guests of the hotel only, bathroom at the beach. Swam in the clean pool that afternoon! Definately recommend eating at their restaurant "Maria's" right across from the beach! Excellent food and amazing service! The main hotel is a short walk to the beach- we walked and drove. Was also convenient with the private beach parking. Our room was very clean and we got great customer service for the short time we were there. Definately recommend! We hope to go back in the future and stay in a cottage!
