We've stayed at the Breezeway a few times before, although always at the accommodations on Winnepaug Road which are a few short blocks to the beach (walk on Montauk Avenue not Winnepaug as the latter has significant traffic). The resort's Winnepaug Road facilities are extensive, quiet, grassy and full of old growth trees. The rooms are well appointed and they offer a swimming pool for beach-weary children and their parents. This year we decided to try Maria's Suites for a couple of reasons: they are just across the street from the beach and the 4-5 rooms/suites are above one of the more popular fine dining spots on the beach.
We chose the Queen room at $249 per night since we would be spending most of our time at a relative's home nearby. The room had 2 Queen beds and a small bathroom. The room was comfortable although far from luxurious. The furnishings were dated although the beds were quite comfortable. Two old fashioned ceiling fixtures provided light for the room. The flat screen TV had cable reception and more than met our needs. The bathroom was small and very basic: very small shower, toilet, sink, small shelf for toiletries (mine) and a small mirror. There were no mirrors in the room which made blowing hair dry difficult because the bathroom was so small.
There was a sliding screened window in the room but because there was a walkway outside leading to another room, we could not leave the window open at night and fall asleep to sound of waves breaking on the beach which is one of the great pleasures of being beach side. The room had an air conditioner which worked fine.
I like the Breezeway because it is one of the few established places on the beach with a reputation for family clientele rather than noisy singles. I did, however, expect that Maria's would be a bit more modern and luxurious for the money. Don't get me wrong, there wasn't anything wrong with the room....but there wasn't anything special about it either -- other than the location.
Parking is behind the restaurant and there is designated parking for hotel guests. One parking permit per room, although if there were more drivers, I think we could have negotiated an additional permit. For those who stay at the Winnepaug Road facilities, the Breezeway provides complementary parking in its own lot right on the beach....a very nice feature for folks with kids and lots of beach chairs, toys and things.
