“Great Hotel to Stay In!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Reviewed August 9, 2007

At first I was a little nervous about staying in a Howard Johnson since I am so used to staying at upper scales hotels because I am in the industry. I have to say, this hotel was excellent. It was in a perfect location not too far from the beach nor the nightlife. If you want to be economical and still have a great place to say you must stay at this hotel. I was actually blown away with their service, everyone that I encountered was very professional and attentive. I would certainly stay there again when I go back to Newport. I also like that there is an Applebee's connected to the hotel.

Great accomodations for the budget friendly family. Close to Newport Mansions and downtown. Employees were very friendly. The building is aging and it kind of had a musty/old odor to it but that disappeared when we turned on the AC. The room was very clean and the bathroom was spotless. The indoor pool and jacuzzi was a welcome relief after a long, hot day of sightseeing. Another plus was the attached Applebees restaurant. I would definitely stay there again.

I stayed in HoJo with my wife and two kids from July 15th through 23rd. on our trip to Newport. I describe this hotel as average. It was not the worst but there is nothing special about it either. We ended up booking it because all our other choices were not available. Howard Johnson has four tiers in their structure - plaza is the top level, then a hotel, followed by an Inn and I think a motel is the last one. This is an Inn so you should not expect it to be on the level of the HoJo Plaza but it was good value for the money. Here is a brief summary of the property:

The Inn has two floors. Rooms on the ground floor have a patio and the second floor has balconies. They offer both smoking and non smoking rooms. Pets are allowed in some rooms on the first floor. On the first floor there is an indoor pool, jacuzzi and sauna which are all decent in size and clean as well as some arcades and snack machine. Second floor has a laundry room and another snack/soda machine. In our room we had two beds, TV with plenty of channels including HBO and on demand programs. If you ask for a deluxe room you also get a small fridge and microwave. The bathroom was pretty clean and plenty of the usual toiletries in case you don't bring your own. There is an in room safe you can use for a small daily fee. The maid service is provided daily and the rooms are kept clean. In some rooms the carpets are old but otherwise no big issues. On one side the hotel faces their parking lot and Office Depot on the other it is a small grass courtyard and then another parking lot for Hampton Bay Inn and a new Residence Inn by Marriot (expect some construction noise if traveling before mid August)

In the lobby they offer free internet access and if you have your own computer they will provide you free wireless access in your room. There is an Applebee's attached to the hotel and you can walk directly into it without going outside. They offer continental breakfast for 3.99 and then you get 10% off for lunch and dinner.

The two things I enjoyed the most about this hotel is their customer service and location. The staff is very polite and accommodating. They welcome you with a light snack in your room. Call you within the first half hour to check if you are ok with the room and if you have an issue they will fix it quickly. Their location is great too. Because they are in Middletown you avoid paying crazy lodging prices they charge in Newport. The hotel is located on Broadway which leads straight into downtown Newport (Thames St.) and is a 10 minute ride at the most. They are also within 10 minutes from the area beaches and the Mansions. There is a supermarket in the adjacent plaza which is great if you get a room with a fridge. There are plenty of different restaurants around and there is a movie theater less than 2 miles away which is a good option for a rainy day if you are traveling with kids.

Overall I would recommend this hotel to those who travel on a budget and want decent accommodations. Again, remember that this is an Inn and you should not expect it to be a plaza. Just as a alternative suggestion you may want to look at the Hampton Bay Inn which just opened so everything is new and is located in the next lot to HoJo. Also in the same lot there is a brand new Residence Inn by Marriot which is about to open in the next few weeks but both properties might charge more than Howard Johnson because they are new.

Finally a few words about the area. Newport is very nice and we had a great time for a week with our two small kids. The beaches are good. If traveling with little kids use the Third beach which has no waves. Mansions are worth seeing and a stroll along the Cliff Walk is spectacular. The food is really good too all along the Thames St. and the peers.

Feel free to email me with questions or if you want any additional specific information.

We stayed at thsi property for 1 night. We attended a wedding in Massachusettes, and were staying in Newport for 1 night prior to meeting friends the next day in Mystic, Connecticut.

The hotel is conveniently located, fight off Main Street (114) only 5 minutes from Downtown Newport, and very close to the beach, cliffwalk, and the mansions. There are plenty of restaurants near by.

Check in was fast and painless. The 1 public computer in the lobby was broken. They do not have complimentary breakfast or coffee.

We payed around $188 with the AAA discount--for the holiday weekend, we thought it was a fair price. The hallways looked somewhat old an dated. The room was large, and we had 2 complimentary water bottles. The AC worked great, and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was small and cramped, and did not have a fan, so it was very humid following a shower. I believe the rooms all had internet access, but I didn't have my laptop.

We did not spend much time in the room, and just needed a place to sleep, so it was fine. If I was coming with children, or staying for more than 1 or 2 nights, or on a romatic getaway, I would consider upgrading to a nicer property, with a better bathroom, and possibly a breakfast.

The Middletown Howard Johnson's is a well-run but older property. Though the address is Middletown it is about a mile from the Newport city line, a five-minute drive to the downtown waterfront and ten minutes to the Mansions. Because it is not in Newport itself prices are much lower than far inferior choices a mile or so away.

The hotel is located on a commercial strip near lots of strip malls, car dealerships, and both chain and local restaurants. The "view" from our first floor room was the parking lot and the office supply store next door. It is a place to sleep while touring Newport, nothing more, but it does its job well. From the outside the hotel is undistinguished but the inside is fine.

The room itself (we had a "deluxe" room which is about $10 more than the standard) was obviously renovated fairly recently. It was very nicely decorated and equipped -- mini fridge and microwave, coffeemaker, two phones, attractive furnishings -- but was on the small side. The bed was not terrible but not great either, same goes for the pillows. Climate control worked well but the airconditioner was noisy.

Check-in staff was friendly and efficient. We left the hotel at 9 or so and when we got back late afternoon the room had been cleaned. On the minus side, we did move the ottoman and found a newspaper underneath it dated ten days before, so clearly they do not move the ottoman when they vacuum the room -- not a big deal, but still . . .

The indoor swimming pool was very nice and not crowded though we were there midweek while school was still in session. Though the pool is indoors there is a lot of glass and it is sunny and connects to an outdoor patio. There is also a large jacuzzi which was very nice and a sauna which we did not use.

The HoJos is managed and owned by the same people as the next door Hampton Inn and the Residence Inn under construction. They do a nice job and provide nice value -- we stayed in the Hampton some months ago and it was very nice as well.

When comparing the two properties take note that the HoJo does not provide free breakfast though continental breakfast for hotel guests only is available at the connected Applebees for $3.99 a person, so factor that into the cost comparison.

All-in-all, an excellent and reasonably-priced option in an expensive area.

I have stayed at this hotel a number of times and am consistently pleased. The rooms are large, clean and pleasant and for the price it's a great deal.
A new hotel is being built next door so construction noise could be a problem during the week.
