Wasn't sure about staying at HJ, but was pleasantly surprised. Room and bathroom was clean. Big room with high ceilings made it very comfortable. Free wireless internet was helpful and it was generally very quiet place to stay.

The place itself was fine. Clean spacious rooms, decent bathrooms and multiple mod cons. Useful free parking and wi-fi too. The main problem we had was presuming it would be a good base for exploring Newport by both day and night. If you intend to drive the whole time, this place will be OK being just 5-10 mins up the road. But if you wish to sample Newport's abundant nightlife and need to leave the car behind you will struggle up in Middletown as it appears that taxis are at a premium here. We assumed taxis for the evening would be fine but on a Saturday night it took us 90 minutes to finally get one and nearly missed restaurant closing times. The staff on the desk can only provide a list of numbers which you can never get through to, so you're on your own waiting or walking!

Stayed for one Sunday night in April 2011. Going by past reviews of this hotel, I figured I would get a decent place. I was not disappointed.

Checkin was quick, easy and friendly. made advance reservations on line and was in my room withing 5 minutes. Receptionist very pleasant and friendly and happy to answer questions.

The hotel is very convenient to downtown Newport, as well as the Navy base. Rooms were clean, quiet and quite roomy. The bathroom was spotless. The bed was very comfortable. Nice color cable TV with good variety of local and cable channels.

i couldn't find anything to complain about. An excellent bargain. Highly recommended.

This Howard Johnson will charge you for damages that you didn't do. Make sure you get an employee to look over your room and note the damages when you check in, I got a smoking room and was charged for burn marks in the carpet and to the bedskirt costing me $306.82. For that price plus the cost of my room, I could have stayed in one of the luxury hotels around Newport.

npt_traveler, Director of Operations at Howard Johnson by Wyndham Middletown Newport Area, responded to this reviewResponded January 20, 2011

Dear Travelers,
Room conditions are checked daily by the Head Housekeeper to ensure high levels of cleanliness and condition. The burn marks were discovered after a NY Eve rental and were documented with photography. The General Manager did contact the guest to discuss the incident. The hotel maintains that regardless of which occupant caused the damage, the registered guest was charged because we believe it occurred during their stay. We remain committed to providing quality accommodations and hope travelers review other comments regarding our integrity and service.

The Howard Johnson Inn Middletown is an excellent choice of accommodation if visiting the Newport area. Hotels within Newport itself are prohibitively expensive and opting for neighbouring Middletown, not that far away, is a much more economical plan. This hotel has clean, cosy rooms with comfortable beds. There are many additional useful facilities like a laundry and fitness room. The staff was friendly and helpful. There are food options nearby. A truly good value hotel.
