This is a lovely place to visit and take a 1.5 mile ocean-view walk. We loved it. I think you can see harlequin ducks here in the winter as well as seals.

Sachuest National Wildlife Refuge is my favorite place to walk in all the Newport area. We go here on an almost daily basis. We just walk the paths, most of which are easy and even. The smell of the beach roses is heavenly, and the chatter of the birds makes it so you do not even want to talk, just listen to the world around you, it is so busy and musical. You may see a deer or a buck, a meadow vole or a mink if you look closely. You can walk along the meadows, but the sea is always close. In the fall it all changes to beautiful browns and tans. Lovely lovely place! Main building has bathrooms, and there are programs for families and kids, and bird walks every weekend. Come connect with nature, just remember to pick up your trash!

Beautiful trails with golden rode flowers along the way. Very easy to walk. Didn't see any wildlife just a seagulls.

I guess this is a seasonal place in terms of wildlife visitors, but to be honest it wasn't worth the drive at all. All we saw were a few deer and seagulls!

The best part of the nature preserve are the trails. There are 2 main trails, one along the ocean and the other mostly through the foliage. The views from the trails are so relaxing. The trails are not difficult though we wish we had brought our walking sticks to go down to the shore on the many shoe acxess sites. There are massive boulders that would be fun to walk around.on. The ocean loop trail is a little rocky and has some roots that could catxh your shoe bur nothing too strenuous. The other loop is all flat and tiny gravel. There is no charge for this wonderful place. That makes it even better! What a gift!
