Fort Wetherill State Park
Ranked #3 of 19 things to do in Jamestown

One of the best parks in the area. Usually much quieter than other local attractions, with some great hidden corners and gorgeous views of the bay. Significant fortifications have obviously seen some better days, but they have their own unique charm and are pretty cool to explore. Lots of little trails to hike and enjoy.

This was my first time kayaking here. It's free to launch, and it is very popular with divers.

The water was rough and the swells were big: challenging and super fun! We crossed over to Fort Adams. Beautiful area with waves breaking against rugged cliffs, although we hadlunch in a cove area where trash washed in. It was a reminder how important it is to protect our oceans and beaches.

We crossed over to Fort Adams. I'd do this again, and explore even more! There are trails all over the area and history to be explored (for those who don;t want to get on the water).

...there is nothing else here but a fabulous view where you don't have to spend a cent to enjoy the outdoors.

My husband and I live in Houston, Texas and wanted our vacation to be very different than the hot nothingness that we're used to. Boy, did we pick the right place. Neither of us have been to New England so we didnt know what to expect. Unfortunately, a pretty big storm blew in unexpectedly so we thought there wouldnt be much to do or see. We were definitely wrong. We are staying in Newport, Rhode Island for the Folk Festival and have a couple days to kill so we wanted to get a little lost and just explore. We both are history lovers so Jamestown was definitely on our list. Ft Wetherill has the most amazing views we've had the pleasure of laying eyes on. We threw on some tennis shoes, hopped in the car, took ocean drive then the toll bridge over to Jamestown. Right away we flipped our lid. The quantity of sailboats are amazing. The lower levels of Ft Wetherill are eerie and heavily graffitied. Its was very disheartening to see hoodlums tear apart our nations history. The view from the trails that lead to the coves outside the fort are a treat. If you can take any trail you see off the beaten path- just be ready to climb. Definitely be SAFE! Although the weather was bad, I loved seeing the ocean as wild as it was. Waves crashed along the rocks and made for some great memories that pictures really cant do justice.

If you have time head out to beavertail. The lighthouse out there is gorgeous. I'd also take all the roads you can in the area and look at all the houses and see if you can find the Daughters of the Revolutionary War Memorial. Basically, Jamestown is unbelievable.

There really is a fort at Ft Wetherill, which guarded Narragansett Bay during WWI and WWII. Since then it has been abandoned to vandals, so the fort itself is not really the attraction. It's the breathtaking views from the trails above the fort. Lots of benches, all donated in the memory of loved ones, line the trails. If you have children keep them well in hand: it runs along the top of a cliff high above jagged rocks and crashing surf. Spectacular views of the Newport coastline from here.
