Owner description: Blithewold, named in Yankee Magazine's 2010 Best 5 Public Gardens in New England is located on Narragansett Bay, 25 minutes east of Providence and 60 minutes south of Boston. Blithewold, a 33-acre summer estate with grand views of Narragansett Bay, is nationally significant in American history as one of the most fully developed and authentic examples of the Country Place era. The property features a 45-room mansion filled with family heirlooms framed by a series of lovely gardens that range in character from mysterious to exotic and from poetic to practical. An exceptional collection of rare and unusual plants, specimen trees, an accessible greenhouse, and whimsical stonework project a character that is romantic, fresh and inspiring - and unique to Blithewold. Come...and be inspired.

“A Mansion to Make Your Own”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2012

One enters the beautiful Blithewold translated.."Beautiful-woods" Mansion through the Rose Garden and under the stone-made "Moon Bridge." Equipped with a little map of the grounds, one can wander at their leisure and enjoy a self-guided tour of both the engrossing gardens including the largest Sequoia Tree east of the Mississippi and splendid flowering bushes, annuals and perennials and the gorgeous water pond as well as inside the Mansion, where guides quietly stand or sit close by, to answer any questions about the original owners of the property and their fantastic history. The grass lawn stretches down to Narragansett Bay and the sea breeze accompanies the most delightful of mornings or afternoons.

“If you love gardens. . .”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

Blithewold is a small mansion by Newport standards but it is a lovely and lovingly preserved summer home. One gets the feeling it was a happy home. The self-guided tour includes spectacular gardens, formal and "natural." You can easily spend two hours wandering the house and grounds. I think it would be even nicer if the place had a little tea room selling coffee, tea and drinks. Since they don't, make sure you bring some water if you are touring the grounds in the summer heat .

“Stately Majestic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

The owner...They were so good to preserved and deed the whole mansion to the state of RI. When you go right through it...you are entering the a place so totally different from other mansions around RI. There was this huge mirror...that when you go the the field facing the front window, you can see yourself that far...The trees...specially the "Sequoia" you have no need to go further South of California to see one. We have it right here at Rhode Island...

“Come at Christmas and see what the Gilded Age looked like during the holidays!”

A beautiful period home which is fabulously decorated for the holidays. We have also come in the summer when the grounds are at their peak and they are particularly spectacular.
