“So many good things about the Strand, but...”
Reviewed December 25, 2012

...the last 3 times I've gone, there have been issues with food and drink being spilled on me and unruly (drunk) people being allowed to continue disruptive behavior.

The theater is beautifully restored and very comfortable. It's almost impossible to get a bad seat. The productions are very professionally presented and the selection of performances varied.

The ticket prices are a bit high, but understandable in their situation.

I have spoken with the management several times about the food and drink policy and their seeming lack of effective security when it comes to really disruptive/aggressive people. They seemed to be appreciative of my comments, but did not offer to reimburse me for cleaning of my silk wrap and leather boots, nor have they taken measures to stop the problems I brought to their attention.

It is very off-putting to be in a lovely theater, awaiting the overture, only to have the smell of nachos and the sound of them crunching in the mouth of the person behind you. It is similarly off-putting to have obviously drunk people behind you, sold wine that they are permitted to bring into the theater. Of course, in their excitement during a musical performance, stand up and spill their wine all over me.

I accept that the theater is making much-needed income from the sale of wine and food. There is, however, no reason that food and beverages should be allowed into the theater. There should also be a policy about refusing service to questionable (drunk) people.

The security issue is even more upsetting to me. For some reason, on 3 occasions, I have been seated near disruptive people, 2 of whom, the performer had to stop for and speak to. In none of these instances was there anyone at the theater that was capable of taking control of the situation, ruining it for everyone. The management sent a woman/usher in her 50's or 60's to deal with one of the people...obviously...that didn't help.

It is clear that the theater has to take security seriously and have on the premises nightly, people who can manage and eject disruptive people and who can assure the other paying patrons a safe and enjoyable theater experience. If this happens, along with a "no food and drink in the theater" policy, I would give them a 5 star rating once again.

great venue for small sized concert, saw a couple concerts there. Parking garage is only a block or two away so that was convenient.
