“Just what we wanted!”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

We had driven to York for a family wedding and, after checking into our hotel, we had some time to explore and and find a place for lunch. As we toured the City Market, we stumbled upon the back entrance to Mudhook!. How fortuitous!

This is just what a brewpub should be, cozy, comfortable, house beer (no guest taps) and a simple menu of very good food.

The beers were above average. This taster would like them a little more if the bitterness was toned down or balanced with a little more malt flavor. The Deep Sea Stout was quite impressive.

The beer battered fish sandwich was excellent! Like the fish, the french fries that accompanied the sandwich were perfectly cooked and seasoned. (So many places either over salt their fries or send leave it completely up to the diner). The cream of crab soup was almost like a warm crab dip thinned out with a little half and half. The soup was loaded with sweet, succulent crab meat.

Courtney, our server, was a delight! She was attentive without being annoying, knowledgable about the beers and the food.

Mudhook Brewing is a great catch.

“Great food, excellent beer, wonderfully pleasant staff!”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

The beer is what brought us here and we weren't disappointed. I didn't expect the high quality food though. Definitely ask about that day's "Green Weenie" salad special. You can't go wrong with the buffalo chicken or crab dip either. Add to the the Market next door where the brewhouse is and you have an awesome day out.

“A Nice Addition to York's Microbrew Scene”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

We've been to Mudhook several times and love the atmosphere & location- off of the Central Market and Cherry Lane Plaza. It's easy walking distance to our newest tap house, Holy Hound and Liquid Hero.

Food-wise, the menu is limited but OMG try their chicken tenders with a beer batter! They're enough alone to bring us back. The beers range from a pale style to a stout. You might want to try their sampler but honestly they give generous tastes of any of their beers !

Service was good. Katie was attentive and personable without hovering. I wish they would offer a few taps or bottles other than their own. Parking is free after 5 on York. Favorite beer so far for us is the Red Ale. Do yourself a favor and save some room for another beer at Liquid Hero across from the ball park off George Street. Try their HeroWeizen for comparison for depth of flavor.

“Go ANYWHERE else”
Reviewed August 13, 2012

I have been to this place twice, thinking my first impression was off. Nope, I was correct. Went there on Saturday & the OWNER was behind the bar & wouldn't even acknowledge the 3 of us standing there, by saying "be right with you, Hi, anything would have been nice. But nope, instead I got a dirty look & he actually said "we are doing what we can, what do you want"??? OMG. When your beer is tasteless, wine is warm & food is terrible, you better count on your service, if that is the case, this place is in trouble. Go to White Rose, Holy Hound, Maewyn's, Bistro 19...any of them over this place.

“Limited Selection, Slow Kitchen”
Reviewed January 17, 2012

There is one word that can sum up Mudhook: small. The space is small, the bar is small, the beer selection is small, the menu is small. The space felt crowded because it was so small, the tables were packed, and it was difficult to find (hidden in an alley). There were five beers on tap, which were mediocre, and only a few menu selections. Beside the usual soups, salads, and appetizers, you have the choice of a burger, a chicken sandwhich, or a hot dog, which can be prepared in a variety of options. I understand that a brew pub is not supposed to have an extensive menu, but where's the pub food? There should be some actual entree items, not just sandwiches. With the limited size and selection, you would assume that the kitchen would at least be fast. Not the case. It took 45 minutes from the time we ordered to make three burgers and one chili. Completely inexcusable considering the only thing they are making fresh are burgers, chicken, and hot dogs. Not only was the wait bad, but our burgers were extremely well done and had the consistency of boot leather; not everybody likes their burgers well done--I told them medium rare. At least our waiter was nice, that was the one saving grace.
