We had driven to York for a family wedding and, after checking into our hotel, we had some time to explore and and find a place for lunch. As we toured the City Market, we stumbled upon the back entrance to Mudhook!. How fortuitous!
This is just what a brewpub should be, cozy, comfortable, house beer (no guest taps) and a simple menu of very good food.
The beers were above average. This taster would like them a little more if the bitterness was toned down or balanced with a little more malt flavor. The Deep Sea Stout was quite impressive.
The beer battered fish sandwich was excellent! Like the fish, the french fries that accompanied the sandwich were perfectly cooked and seasoned. (So many places either over salt their fries or send leave it completely up to the diner). The cream of crab soup was almost like a warm crab dip thinned out with a little half and half. The soup was loaded with sweet, succulent crab meat.
Courtney, our server, was a delight! She was attentive without being annoying, knowledgable about the beers and the food.
Mudhook Brewing is a great catch.
