“Consistent pleaser!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2014 via mobile

I've been coming here since the 1990's. The inside is hardcore tavern, rough hewn floors, small windows, all the charm that goes with. The menu changes every so many years and the current offering never fails to please. One of the best Reubens around, great crab nachos, French dip is awesome. Portion sizes are great. Tons of out door seating with a bucolic view. Prices are a bit steep.

“Always good!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2014 via mobile

We love to eat outside in the summer and 4 Dogs is great location to do r his. We often go there after kayaking down the West Branch Brandywine river.
Their flat breads are great and a wide variety of choices.
Dogs are allowed to be there too!

“Perfect place to be on a perfect summer evening”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2014

Temps in the low 80s, humidity lower than it EVER is in July! Where should we be? No question -- the patio at Four Dogs Tavern.

The menu is extensive and eclectic and the specials are always intriguing. But we keep coming back to some of the old standbys -- the fried calamari FOR SURE! Fish & chips, pretty darned good! Crispy chicken with polenta, oh, yeah!! Two of the party ordered the special soups, gazpacho and asparagus, both chilled. The asparagus soup got a big thumbs up; the gazpacho not so much -- it was not the perfect blend of cukes and tomatoes but rather too heavily tipped toward tomatoes.

There are three or four fondues on the menu, and that's not something you see very often. But it is SO much fun when the air has a crisp chill to it. (Not for steamin' summer nights!)

Across the parking lot is Marshalton Inn. That used to be a separate, much more upscale, venue. But these days the menu is the same at both places.

So there are really three choices: the dark, atmospheric ambience of the Four Dogs pub inside; the Four Dogs patio; and the Marshalton Inn, which still feels a lot more "special occasion" than anything on the opposite side of the parking lot, even if the food is the same!

We seldom visit Four Dogs when the patio is closed, just our preference to not be in a dark place to have dinner. But for 5-6 months a year, with the help of heaters, the patio is just an excellent place to unwind and enjoy some interesting food with -- gosh, I shouldn't have waited so long to say this -- VERY GOOD SERVICE! The service has as much to do with our repeat visits as the food does!!

“One Great Restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2014

Beautifal Historic, Rustic Restaurant. Arrived early with a party of 8 and with an inside wait of 1 hour where quickly accomodated on the porch. The service was excellent. The food- OMG was some of the best ever. Having lived in Europe for several years we ordered the Cheese Fondue for an appetiser which was reminiscent of the Apres Ski parties in the Swiss Alps. I followed that with the French Onion Soup which was the best ever and would make Julia Childs proud. The 7 others ordered across the menu and everyone swore they would be back.

“Four Dogs = Four Stars”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2014

This tavern is fortunate to be located in a lovely historic building in the quaint, historic town of Marshalton, Pennsylvania. The tavern itself has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, which the attitudes of the staff mirror. There is usually a lively bar crowd, but that does not diminish the experience for table diners. The menu and the food are the star of the show. The menu is extensive, with lots of comfortable favorites together with some very unique and contemporary selections. And with all of this, my absolute favorite item on the menu are "Gougeres," which are delicate little cheese puffs that are so delicious you want to eat about 300 of them! Another favorite is the Caesar salad -- mouth watering. Actually, we've never ordered anything at Four Dogs that we didn't enjoy thoroughly. I highly recommend this restaurant.
