A local treasure full of garden rooms and landscapes. It is charming but more, it also has a sophistication and subtlety that are hard to find in gardens of this scale.

A beautiful place, not massive in size but has all the right ingredients that you would expect from best known gardens of the world.

Who doesn’t love flowers, a lily pond, a babbling brook, ‘castle ruins’, and chairs to sit in around every corner, positioned perfectly, to encourage you to gaze and gaze at the surrounding beauty? Chanticleer is all of these things. A feature in Budget Travel magazine’s May 2008 issue put this lovely garden on my radar. It is only $5/per person to get in. An approximate one mile paved trail takes you past one garden after another. You can’t help put stray from the path to take a closer look and enjoy the fragrances. There are several drinking fountains along the way and at least one set of bathrooms. I wish I lived closer so I could visit often.

I have been to many botanical gardens and I have been to Chanticleer a half dozen times. It is really something special. It is not an old fashioned botanical garden with straight pathways, topiary shrubs, and intermittent plant name tags. Instead it is the most unique collection of creative garden spaces I have ever come across. One garden tends to flow into the next, the gardens have their own personalities, there is a "funky" even whimsical feeling to many of the gardens. The quality of the plants and the creativity of the designs is extraordinary. You will see some of the finest collections of perennials - anywhere. You wind around curved paths and one delightful garden leads to another. There are beautiful open vistas, and intimate little spaces. Structures and sculpture play an important role in the experience. The plants don't have name tags - it would be impossible to tag all the plants. The container gardens are amazing, really amazing. If you are a photographer - you will think have died and gone to heaven. The photographic opportunities are exceptional. The gardens are at their prime in spring and early summer, but they have great tropical container gardens that are at their prime in late summer and fall. If you are into gardening, plants, perennials - you have to see Chanticleer at least once - it is an amazing experience.
