This is certainly a unique dining experience in a renovated train dining car set along a Days Inn parking lot. Although it's not quite The Orient Express, it is a quaint and rather charming setting for dining in Tannersville, PA. More surprising than the setting, however, is the food. It is mostly delicious! I've gone for the lunch buffet a number of times as well as having dined a la carte in the evenings and I have not yet been disappointed in the food. The tandoori chicken ordered off the menu in the evenings has been fresh and yummy, served on a just as tasty bed of cabbage subzi. Highly recommended. I live in New York and frequent the Indian places in Jackson Heights and Hicksville and I would say the food is on par with most of them. The prices are higher than you'd find in Queens and Long Island (about double) although I suppose that is to be expected out in the middle of nowhere like this.
The only disappointing dish I have had here was the Vindaloo. It was way too vinegary the time I ordered it to the point it was inedible. We left most of it and did not take the leftovers home with us. Also, the service has been hit or miss. Sometimes, the wait staff is barely attentive enough while at others, they barely ever come to ask how things are. On these occasions, hailing a server to get more water can be quite the chore when none are present for long stretches. If that is the way the wait staff operates, I'd just rather they leave pitchers or carafes of water at the table like they do at many New York restaurants rather than passing off their brand of lazy, inattentive service.
Overall though, if you are looking for Indian food in the Stroudsburg area, you'd be hard pressed at the moment to find a better one than Tandoor Palace.
