Super 8 State College
Ranked #21 of 26 Hotels in State College
Reviewed August 5, 2013

On our first night there, I had 8 large bites on each side of my back, and even more on my ankles and legs. That is when I had been sitting on the sofa that afternoon. Once, while standing close to the offending sofa, I stood up to fix something, I experienced a sharp pain on my leg. Looking down I found a small cockroach biting me in the leg, which I promptly removed and killed. From then on, I decided to avoid the sofa. Lo and behold, the bed was bug ridden, as well. The following morning and each morning thereafter, I had a new bites on me. The bites stopped occurring only after we left this hotel and moved to another location. The carpeting inside the room and in the hallway was not clean, not the kind that would easily be resolved by vacuuming alone. The breakfast was okay.

The Super-8 in State College is a low-budget hotel, but it has a few nice touches that raise it a bit above the places I usually stay: A modest continental breakfast is included; the lobby has a free espresso machine; all the rooms have free wi-fi; and the front counter serves little snacks in the late afternoon. The quality of all of these items is like the fare at a convenience store and won't satisfy a fussy person, but I was happy enough, and they show an eagerness to please. In other respects the room was typical.

The location is good. It is on a busy road but is set back. A short walk along the bike path in one direction brings you downtown, and a walk of about half a mile in the other direction brings you to the edge of gorgeous countryside dotted with picturesque farms. The bike path seems to go everywhere and is an important benefit for anyone who wants to run or stroll. A supermarket, a diner, and a few restaurants are all within a stone's throw of the motel.

On the down-side, the corridors are noisy in the early morning. The hotel seems to be a favorite of line-men, construction workers, and other people who need to get to their jobs early, so around 6:00 in the morning the motel comes alive, at least on the ground floor, where I was staying. Some large fan or other motor outside the window hummed constantly, day and night.

Summary: Among the best in its class (low-budget motels).

Room Tip: Ground floor tends to be noisy
