“Would not return”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 7, 2009

The positive - nice bed, bathtub
The Negatives - for $400 a night plus tax in the middle of nowhere I expect a lot more service and comfort. Booked this hotel solely on the great recommendations, it was a mistake. This hotel is perfect for an older crowd with money to burn, its a quiet place with nice homey feel, but it offers no luxurious amenities usually associated with a highly priced hotel once again in the middle of nowhere. Had it been priced at $200 I would of not been prompted to write my 1st review ever. But when I am shelling out $400 a night I expect there to be a smartly placed decor, not a big clunky armor with an ancient tv in it placed so that no one can watch it. Also when it is clearly said over the phone that a shuttle will be provided, when in fact you have to hike a mile to another hotel to get a shuttle to Penn State that only runs after the games have started or 3 hours before, not cool! The host did nothing to help me in the situation, laughing when I asked about public transport, not knowing the schedule for it. It seemed like the host had no clue about typical issues that any hotel once again for $400 should know. They were not helpful in any way! There was nothing that distinguished this hotel from any other $200 priced ones in great cities like Boston, Seattle, or San Diego and those provided all the things like flat screen tvs, slippers, cuetips, and etc. These things are not important but are expected when paying so much.

This was suppose to be a great little getaway from a highly stressed overworked environment, it turned out to be just another stressful weekend not a relaxing and comfortable one. I will not be returning to this hotel!

We at Carnegie House deeply regret that you did not enjoy your stay. I have spoken to each of our staff about the game day transportation so further miscommunication will not occur. Carnegie House guests have quick access to the Penn State game shuttle via a 5 minute walk to the Toftrees resort, along a winding wooded path through the golf course. The shuttle runs continuously from 3 hours before the game until kick-off and for an hour and half after the game. Carnegie House is dedicated to providing our guests with superior customer service, so we very much appreciate that you took your time to share your comments. We wish the very best for you in all of your travels.

More like a boutique hotel than a b&b--because of the verdant setting (gold course and gamelands), upscale decor, fine linens and ambience. But also a grand b&b with excellent cuisine. For breakfast, my omelet with domestic chevre was fluffy and seasoned with just the right amount of freshly ground pepper and chives, with a generous filling of creamy chevre. My spouse also enjoyed his 3-egg omelet with fresh mushrooms and gruyere. Must try dinner there next time. Our king bed was extremely comfortable, with the only drawback being the air conditioning unit that blew cold air right onto the bed. We turned the unit off to sleep, which made the room a little warm during a heatwave--but it wasn't bad. Very conveniently located near the Penn State campus but in a quiet setting.

I definitely recommend staying here - very nice place, great service, great breakfast. Room and bath were both large, well decorated and spotless.

This was our second visit to this lovely small hotel (who says it's a B&B??) and I can't imagine staying anywhere else now that one of our sons works at Penn State. It's set amid trees in a lovely hilly area called Toftrees, convenient to everything (including phenomenal shopping for foodies at Wegman's). It's very English and Scottish in feel with lovely period prints and deep colors, with Chippendale style reproduction furniture. You'll feel like you're in England or Scotland too when you see the tiny bar stocked with single malts. The room we had was very quiet (#14) and spacious, with a half-canopied king size bed, good sitting area and very large bathroom with separate shower and soaking tub. The staff was uniformly excellent: helpful, friendly, going the extra mile. The new manager, Elizabeth (aka Murgie) is charm itself and our server Svetlana was perfect. We dined there one night when we weren't with family and it's all done very European-style. First you have a drink in the 19th century-style library while you study the menu. The server brings you that evening's amuse-bouche, and you order. When your appetizer is ready, you're seated in the dining room which has great acoustics--by which I mean it's not noisy even when full. The food was excellent and the menu offers a good range of fish, fowl and meat entrees. I found staying there very romantic and relaxing, and can't wait till my next trip. There's an ownership change in the works and there might be some tinkering and updating after May 1, but what they have there is really very special already.

The Carnegie House should be listed as a lovely hotel not really what you think of as a B&B. The rooms and the hotel are immaculate and lovely. You MUST have dinner there. The menus and cocktails are brought to you in the living areas, by the fire place, it is so lovely and relaxing, the food is wonderful and the service great. The room includes a full freshly cooked breakfast with linens and delightful service. Ask for a room overlooking the golf course at Toftrees, beautiful! There is no other place to stay in State College!!

My partner and I stayed at the Carnegie House in October. The room we stayed in was large, clean, and well appointed. As another review stated, the decor is not modern but it is very nice, not cheap nor gaudy.

The Carnegie House was very quiet when we were there. We saw other couples and some families with older children (looked like they may have been touring the campus or in for an on-campus interview) but we didn't see or hear any young ones at all.

Breakfast was included with our stay and while the menu was somewhat limited, the food always came out hot and freshly prepared. Dinner in the restaurant was good with above average service for State College.

  • Liked — It was a comfortable place to stay without being pretentious.
  • Disliked — The wireless internet connectivity was poor.

What an impeccably maintained hotel in such a charming location! I wish I took photographs because the photographs on the Carnegie House's website do not do the hotel justice. My favorite hotels tend to be more modern hotels; however you won't find any of those in State College. This traditionally decorated (but not gaudy) hotel is actually situated on the fringes of Toftrees Golf Course and has a beautiful outdoor dining area practically on the fairway. I was in State College for business and considered this hotel to be a delightful oasis. The large rooms have windows with views and lovely window seats to top it off. The best part about the hotel is the incredibly attentive staff. They make you feel as though you are family and even treat you to homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookies every evening and have an endless supply of the tasty treats in the lobby (which make up for the hard beds). Look no longer because this is the best in State College.
