“Exceptional, imaginative dining”

My third time at Zola and it remains my favorite place in State College. Although a bit upscale for a college town, it's good to have this as an option - imaginative, delicious food perfectly prepared, very good service and a well-chosen wine list. Zola is a must-visit every time I'm in town.

“Upscale for State College”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

We made reservations for a Saturday night when the students were not in town. Interestingly, they only had later reservations (8:30pm and later) yet when we arrived at 8:20 the restaurant was 2/3 empty. This struck us as odd. Our waitress, however was very attentive, and seemed to appreciate that my husband and I joked around. I'm sure she sees plenty of more pretentious academics or parents who feel the need to be aloof to the locals. The food was presented nicely. We enjoyed the calamari salad with crisp calamari that was more calamari than just fried dough (I hate that!). I had the salmon and my husband had the red snapper. Both were pleasing in presentation and to the palate. The wine and beer list is very good. Because it is State College and the choices are very limited, Zola's can afford to have a high opinion of itself. But having lived in large cities, from Chicago to Philadelphia, and traveled around the globe, I can tell you that this place would rank very differently (aka, lower) if it were in a different location. But for a nice meal in State College, it's a decent place to try.

“Best Restaurant in Downtown State College”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2013

I have visited Zola's several times in small and large groups -- personal and business. Not a typical student's restaurant, Zola is upscale with a fluid [seasonal] menu and a few unique specials. Reservations are highly suggested. There are 4 or tables in front window area that are most private and quiet -- you need to request. The whole fish - crispy whole red snapper is the signature dish -- but I would recommend many of the other items on the menu. The steaks are great, scallops, and a interesting and large calamari salad. You will also typically see a unique dish or two like goat stew....worth trying! Food is presented in artistic manner. Parking is available in the area but avoid the old Arby's lot as they will tow your car!! On your visit to State College --- this is a worthwhile stop! But is isn't college cheap....

“Consistently great”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2012

On our annual trip to State College, we visited Zola's Bistro, and, once again, it was great. The service is professional and very friendly and fun. The wine list is great! The food is great! We had Seafood Bisque and Mussels appetizer, with Scallop and Pork Loin appetizers. All = YUM!, The experience is great! If you are looking for a "upper scale" meal in State College, head to Zola's first!
