“Only one major problem”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2013

This was my first stay at this hotel, although I've been to it several times for conferences. The room was large and very clean, and had the expected amenities for such a place. However, the bathroom was surprisingly small. You had to do a bit of maneuvering to close the door, but that was a minor annoyance. The issue I had the most with was the fact that the wall vent was aimed directly at the bed. So, you could expect to get blasted in the face regardless of what speed you put the fan on. And, you can't adjust the direction of the vent. This made my sleep difficult, but not impossible. The hotel staff was willing to make other accommodations, but at the most inopportune time, since I was in and out for meetings, But, they were very friendly and helpful with other things I needed. My job paid for my stay, and that would be the only reason for me to stay again. If you're attending a conference at the hotel as well, then it is without a doubt convenient, and would be worth the price. Otherwise, there are other hotels in town that offer the same amenities at a cheaper price. Also, the hotel is not close to any stores, so be prepared to drive for whatever you need. If not for the vent, this hotel would've gotten 4 stars.

Room Tip: Be sure to that the ventilation is not directed towards the bed, unless you don't mind being bla...

We have stayed dozens of times at The Penn Stater and have always been very happy with their accommodations. The staff is outstanding . They keep a record of our likes and dislikes and make sure we get room we prefer-higher floor ,view, and corner if possible. They have a large array of room types. Choose online the type of room that you want.We get connecting suite and double when staying with our grandchildren. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and maintained. The have a shuttle to take you to town and drivers very friendly and knowledgeable. They will also pick you up return to hotel. The service is free except for the tip that you'll want to give.Rooms very clean , large, and quiet(rarity in State College) .The rooms have high speed internet (no cost)wet bar ,mini- refrigerator, hairdryer , and coffee maker( We always bring Starbucks Via instant). The
Garden Restaurant VG . Also like the food Sports bar Legends and room service.
Prices for FB games vary by game from $329 to $219 and require 2 night minimum.
However other times can often get room for around $100. The fireworks are one of top 10 displays in US. We booked 4th of July at only $104 a night. The Arts festival is $169. Another night was $114. They do have an indoor pool and gym that people seem to be unaware of because we often have to ourselves. Only downside for some people is very long walk to town or campus-that is why they have shuttle vans and shuttle buses.

Room Tip: Get the suite- often same price!

Just attended a conference at the Penn Stater and have nothing but good to say. From the friendly and efficient front desk staff to the very very accommodating and friendly shuttle drivers, to the large amount of FREE and well maintained parking, it all starts and ends well.

The property is wonderfully maintained. I had an executive suite style room with separate bed and sitting areas. The bed was really comfortable, I was kinda surprised, I liked it more each passing night's stay. Linens are of good although not over the top quality and the whole suite was comfortable, serviceable and CLEAN. There is an in room coffee maker (the only downside was particularly terrible coffee...Penn Stater, it really is terrible); a fridge and a wetbar style sink area. The washroom facilities are large, well lit and pretty good. No over the top amenities and you won't swoon with the decor overall but it is just a good quality place to stay. I heard virtually NO between room noise and no between room water noise. Heaven.

On another note, it is very accessible (or at least my room was) for those with walking or other ambulatory disabilities. Wide hallways and doors in the rooms and a wide open washroom

OK, on to the dining opportunities. There is an in house restaurant that serves good (not over the top) food, promptly. There is an in house bar that, while a tad brightly lit for my liking, did a fantastic job of handling both a sudden lunch crowd (this is a BIG conference facility) and a busy evening crowd. Beers were COLD, service was friendly and prompt and food orders well done. This is a particular strength as many food and beverage services buckle under the weight of sudden lunch and evening lines. These people know how to handle it and they did it with seemingly few staff. Nice job.

The conference facility is truly terrific. Rooms are well appointed. Little if any between room noise leak. AV services top notch with good equipment that worked flawlessly.

All in all a great job Penn Stater; I hope I have occasion to come back.

Room Tip: My room was at the end of a hallway, lovely and quiet.

Came up for a convention and was pleased. The rooms are well designed and have the necessary amenities. The staff was friendly and there is a wonderful fireplace in the lobby. The food and refreshments provided by the hotel for the conference were much better than I expected and they had soft drinks readily available all day.

We've stayed here a few times when we visit relatives in the area. The rooms are clean, although last time we noticed a few stains on the carpeting in the room. Overall it was fine. What we can't understand about the place is that even though they make a big deal about "Blue and white goes green" at the hotel, they still have old tube televisions in the rooms, which use considerably more electricity than modern flat panel televisions. I applaud the green initiative, but reusing my towels instead of having them replaced each day is pretty far down the scale of importance in going green, even for a hotel, unless of course their washers and dryers are old technology as well. We've stayed in much cheaper hotels and even they had flat-panel televisions.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a pull-out sleeper sofa for extra room to relax.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your concerns about our room amenities as we certainly want all of our guests to experience comfort and convenience during their stays. The majority of our rooms do have flat-panel televisions in them, with an estimated completion date in the near future for the remaing rooms.
In addition to the television replacement, we have also begun using a temperature control on our guest rooms that is activated upon check-in. Rooms are cooled when not in use, and are brought back up to a comfortable temperature upon registration and can be individually controlled by the guest during their stay.
We are thankful that you have chosen us as your retreat while visiting your family, and hope that we can continue to build our relationship with you. If we are not already aware of your room preferences, please be sure to let our Reservations team know how we can make your next visit even more enjoyable!

Attended a statewide conference and found the Penn Stater to be clean, bright, and very modern. The food was very good and plentiful. Various selections on the buffets -- appropriate temperatures and served in a pleasant display.
Break food was also plentiful and diverse in selection. Beverage bar was extensive.

My only complaint was we were all spread out....Parking is not close to the doors. Check in and lobby area not close to conference floors -- up steps. Meeting rooms not close to the banquet area. Tried to get to the second floor for meetings and ended up in the lodging area.....wonderful housekeeping staff showed me a short cut through the service areas.....otherwise I might still be wondering around.

Room Tip: Read all signage to determine where you need to go.

The Penn Stater is a terrific hotel. Clean, professional staff, reliably consistent. Not in town, so we need to drive places or take mass transit. Great for football weekends, but expensive. Otherwise... I like staying there.
