“Very happy with this kids-take-your-parents property -- will come again”
Reviewed May 27, 2009

This is the kinda place kids take their parents to -- lots of families here and I don't think you'd call this a honeymooners kinda place. Staff were very accommodating; we wanted to visit the mountaintop when there was no tour planned and the front desk and activities desk personnel made it happen for us. Food was spotty -- some of it is excellent and some pretty lousy, but food overall is good enough. Rooms in the main lodge were very nice; the bathrooms were a bit small, especially considering we had what they call a minisuite. Lots of activities; the saturday night elimination dance and grand march was a hoot that we will have to make our kids stay up for next time. Our little kids loved this place and enjoyed all kinds of activities during the weekend such as chalk drawing, minigolf, kitchen class, and bubble blowing; the grounds are fairly compact and it is the kind of place you can have your kids run a bit away from you and not worry about it. Very nice scenic walk to a pretty waterfall that is stroller friendly. Not hard to get a family photo taken by a resident photographer. This place has pros and cons over the Mohonk Lodge, a similar property in upstate NY. But remember that although the Mohonk's food is better and the entertainment is more varied, it also costs a good deal more. Mosquitoes are a problem here when it gets warm. This place offers great value for money, is 1:45 drive from Manhattan and its compactness is a plus. Right now the hotel is less busy than normal due to the economy and they are giving out great discounts. Take advantage of the offers.

I managed an event for my company at Skytop that was attended by 100 people. The entire staff at Skytop Lodge went out of their way to make the week go smoothly. The event coordinators Michelle and Christie did an outstanding job. The meeting space is spacious, new, and clean with the latest technology. Our event required very specific banquet menus and the culinary team did an exceptional job. My company intends to host future events at Skytop Lodge. There is great hiking, golf, swimming and lots of other fun leisure activities to do. The property is beautifully maintained with lush gardens.

My wife and I attended a “Weekend To Remember” marriage conference that was hosted at Skytop Resort in April 2008. From the moment we walked into the resort we knew this was going to be something special.
The property is majestic in its own right but coupled with the surroundings it is out of this world. The entire weekend we were there the staff was gracious and courteous and attended to all our needs and requests. It truly was a Weekend to Remember which is the conference event that we attended last April. The environment made it a perfect time to enjoy the conference and reconnect as a couple. There is a real peace that we felt as we walked around the grounds and just talked to one another. I have to mention that the meals were a notch above outstanding, perhaps approaching remarkable. The chef and his staff out did themselves at every turn.
I have to be honest and say that we have been bragging to everyone for months about our wonderful weekend in the Pocono’s at Skytop.

Some friends and I recently took a weekend trip to Skytop Lodge for a quick escape from reality. From check in to check out everything was wonderful! The Lodge and grounds are amazing. I loved the warm feeling of the lodge, the rooms, and the staff. Every member of the staff was friendly, attentive, and willing to do anything to make your stay perfect. The food was FANTASTIC!!! This jewel in the clouds is hands down the perfect place to play and stay! Thank you for a wonderful weekend and even better memories!

Skytop is only 1.5 hours from Montclair, so it is a quick trip to an absolutely wonderfully relaxing and peaceful stay. The food was once again first rate and plentiful; the horse drawn sleigh added a pleasant taste of adventure; the evening music and Grand March was a delight for all, including our teenagers! Hard to believe that 24 hours at Skytop could so relax and re-energize us. Thank you!

We spent a thoroughly wonderful weekend with our extended family, including a five year old and 3 month old. It couldn't have been more fun. Plenty to do the food was great and the service with outstanding. Having gone to Skytop in my youth I suprised to find the same family --albeith old world ambiance with updated comfortable rooms overlooking the gardens and mountains. It was worth every penny. Our 5 year old learned how to ski---and we didn't spend hours at the slopes--- My only compaint was that the rental skates were very uncomfortable. We even splurged on massages at the spa.

My family and I came here for a weekend getaway and was truly disappointed. The exterior of the Lodge is beautiful, however, the interior is a totally different story. It looks as if they have not updated the place since it was erected almost a century ago. The rooms and hallways are dark, dingy, and dated. The bathrooms may have been updated several decades ago, as the sinks and toilets look more contemporary. However, we had a stand-up shower in our bathroom and it was the size of a cruise ship shower. I'm not sure what to expect about the plumbing from such an old establishment, but the shower water drained slowly. Showering in a puddle of water surely doesn't feel hygenic! Prior to coming here we read mixed reviews. I think the folks who actually like this place have not been to better establishments. Minus the food and activities, the hotel should charge as much as a Holiday Inn. When we first walked into our room, we knew we had made a BIG MISTAKE. They furniture was wood, but together with the dark decor just made me feel like a Stephen King novel. Everything was just old and dirty looking. I didn't even allow my daughter to crawl anywhere near the carpet, she had to stay on the bed the whole time. And beware of asking for a crib, there is a fee of $45 /night!

The interior decorations were typical of a mountain cabin. I was expecting more out of a $500/night hotel. The fireplace was nice in the main room. The dining hall was nothing spectacular, the food was decent. All meals are included, but breakfast and lunch is buffet style. Buffet items were hit and miss. The fruits and vegetable dishes were all very fresh. The protein dishes were not great. Desserts were plentiful and good. I was very disappointed in the children's buffet. Every meal was practically the same: pizza, chicken fingers, french fries, steamed veggies, cupcakes, and cookies. I can't believe in this day and age, when childhood obesity is such a big issue, they would continue to dole out such a menu to the kids day in and day out. For dinner we had mixed reviews, on our first night the food was not very good. It was wedding banquet quality at best (and Skytop does caters weddings). The subsequent nights were much better however. I can see why people praised their food and wine.

About the activities, we had a very young daughter so we really couldn't utilize the skiing, ice skating, and sledding. But if you have older children, then they would love it. On the lower floor there is a pool, pool tables, minigulf and table tennis. I recommend anyone with infants to avoid coming here in the wintertime. You can't go out for walks and enjoy their trails and grounds, so you end up walking around in the same old places. It gets boring really quickly. We decided to take a drive to The Crossings Outlet on our second day and did some shopping. According to their map, they acres and acres of trails. I assume it would be lovely to hike in warmer seasons.

Overall, is it worth $500/night? That depends if you have family members that are of the proper age to utilize all they have to offer. The food was mediocre, wedding banquet like. If you've been to 5 star restaurants or hotels in other cities (Las Vegas, NY, etc) then you will be shocked at coming here and forking over so much money and staying at Grandpa's dingy cabin in the woods.
