A friend and I stopped in Haag's Hotel for breakfast yesterday. As soon as you enter there is the rich aroma of freshly baked goodies, bacon frying, coffee brewing. This is a place you want to visit often. I got to meet one of the owners, Ben, what a terrific guy. The staff and food makes you want to have this a regular stop weather you are a local resident or just passing thorough the Shartlesville, PA area.

At the recommendation of the PA welcome center, my husband and I stopped for lunch on our way to Gettysburg from NYC. What a treat! The food was homey and filling. There is a choice between all american standards like triple decker sandwiches and PA dutch specialties. Every thing is home made The atmosphere was warm and friendly. The new owner stopped by to chat, and gave us a brief history of the hotel. (The dining room appears to be located in the old ballroom) The prices were very reasonable.

Having not been to Haag's Hotel in many years, we were looking forward to the shredded hot chicken sandwiches, which we always enjoyed when we had the opportunity to visit there. Much to our surprise, although the chicken is described as shredded on their web site, they in fact are rather thick slices of chicken, ours were rather dry, on white bread. The dining room was approximately 62 degrees, and remained so even though we asked if it could be warmed up a bit. A strong smell of moth balls was evident. The service was good.

This is a really neat restaurant to see. The food is good and it takes you back to the 1940's style restaurant.
