“Great escape, but pricey”

We visited Great Wolf during the holidays to escape from the gloomy winter days and enjoy some indoor fun at a water park. The resort is clean and the rooms are a decent size. Kids loved the wolf den theme bunk area. Although there are plenty of non-water related activities for the kids to participate in, it is not included in the hotel packages and adds up quickly -- at least $150 per child for a weekend. We ate at one of the restaurant's on site and again very expensive for not so great food - very greasy and overcooked. Highly suggest going off site to one of the nearby restaurants.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from one of the magic wand or story book spots. This area tends to have a lot of...

I had heard so many great things about this place, but when I went I was very disappointed. I thought the food was terrible and the indoor water park was so small and didn't have much for kids to do. It's definitely not good for kids over 10 years old like mine were. It was crazy expensive too!

Just came back from the Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos. I paid for one night but got to use the park for 2 days. The price of the hotel includes 4 tickets to the waterpark. We had a party of 9, so we had to pay extra for the additional ticket ($40 per ticket). The kids (4, 6, 7, 9 and 10 yrs old) had a blast but for the adults it was basically just watching where the kids went. The 9 and 10 years old went to the bigger slides (Hydro Plunge and Double Cannon Drop). These rides have the longest wait time (probably about 15-25 minutes each in the afternoon. For the second day, you can go in at 9 AM and the lines are much shorter. The Alberta Falls had short wait times throughout the day. All the kids loved going to the Slap Tail Pond. I think we spent the most time there. The young one loved the little basketball hoops. Food inside the park is quite expensive. Small soda, fries and a hot dog is $9. They say no outside food is allowed but they don't really check. So bring your own drinks and snacks to save some money. Overall, this was a fun trip for the kids but it is more expensive than other water parks. Coco Keybury has pretty much the same attractions and maybe a bit more for a cheaper price.

I realize that the Great Wolf Lodge is a destination that you go to for their water park. However, I felt that at $500 a night for a double bed room that was probably the quality of a Best Western, we could have stayed at a nicer hotel and just paid for a water park and spent less money. The room was a bit run down and needed updating. The AC would turn on and freeze the room and then stop so it would be super hot. However, The room was very clean. I also felt that the service was not up to snuff for the amount we paid. There was a very long line to check in. Then, there were no bellmen in sight so my husband had to make several trips to our room with all of our toddler paraphernalia. Once we made it to the room, we were disappointed with the room that we were given because it was so far from the pool. So, we asked for a room that was closer to the pool. We were moved to a room that was equally far away on the other side of the resort so we wasted about an hour and a half switching rooms until we finally found one that worked. They did not offer to help us move or any sort of upgrade. The elevators were very slow as there were many children just taking them up one floor.
The water park made the trip. It was a lot of fun and kept the kids busy. We were able to watch the fireworks from our balcony and they were awesome!
We rented a cabana on the Fourth and this was very nice and gave us our own space around the very busy pool.
I wasn't very happy about the food situation as I am diabetic and there were very few healthy or high protein choices when eating by the pool. When I ordered a peanut butter and jelly for my son it was a frozen uncrustable. A lot of money for low quality food.
I think that the Great Wolf Lodge might be worth it if you have several kids and are looking for a vacation in the winter when other water parks aren't open. But, for us, the amount of money would have been better spent going somewhere else where the hotel was a higher quality for less money. Ritz prices for Quality Inn accomodations.

Room Tip: Request a room that is close to the pool.

We were headed elsewhere for a few days when we ran into extreme weather (tornado in NJ/heavy rains). There were 2 families and 4 kids, so we decided to play it safe and head somewhere with indoor activities for the kids. We booked the day of and were able to get a Wolf Den. Kids loved the bunk beds and having their own tv. Only complaint was that their area got very hot as there were no vents in that area. This was our 2nd time at this location. My kids are 6 and 8 and were the perfect age for the rides. They had a blast on the slides. Wait times weren't bad, staff is very attentive and they make it easy for you to stay and enjoy. You can get snacks in the waterpark area and we did a pizza deal for dinner that ended up costing us only $13 per family! We did spend more $ on bowling and the arcade, but not too bad. It's nice to have options for other things to do without having to leave. The morning we were leaving, we checked out and packed a bag to shower/change in the community showers/changing rooms inside the water park. A great option since it let us stay another 5 hours that day. I lived 6 miles away from this location for 7 years and it is depressing. If you leave the facility, head south on Rt. 611 as there are more options for dining/shopping in that direction.

My daughter has been begging for a trip to this Great Wolf property after staying at the one in Sandusky, Ohio last summer. This one is much closer to home for us and we able to take advantage of a great rate because Great Wolf offers it to residents of nearby counties in PA and NJ on certain dates. (Hint: join GWL's e-mail list.)
We checked in around dinner-time on a weeknight and it was very efficient. The room key is imbedded in wristband you use to enter the waterpark. All you have to do is swing it by the door knob and it lets you in. Very clever because you don't have to worry about carrying your key with you when you leave the room.
Room was clean and the beds were very comfortable. Since we were taking advantage of a deal, we got the room with the double-queen beds with a pull-out couch. Only bad parts were that some of the caulk in the bathroom was loose and the balcony had bird droppings in the corner.
The water park, of course, was the highlight and we were able to spend a few hours on the check-in day, and all day on Day 2. As guests we were allowed to stay the whole day after check-out. The check-out was done automatically at 11 a.m., so I didn't have to leave the park to do that. Just have the car packed before going to the park, or you can have the concierge watch your bags for a tip. For your clothing after swimming, simply rent a locker for $20 (you will get $10 back when you turn in the key)
The water park staff kept the lines on the slides moving, and wait times weren't too long when things go busy. There was hardly a wait on the two smaller slides that you entered from the second story.
About the only criticism we had was the wave pool's concrete bottom was rather rough.
We didn't partake in the other things such as the spa and the kids' games as we were on a budget. However, my 12-year-old was more than satisfied with just the water park.
We stayed away from the on-site restaurants and took advantage of the mini-fridge in the room.

Room Tip: If you're on a budget, take advantage of the mini-fridge and have at least one meal in the room.

We only went to this resort because we had a group rate. In my opinion the rates are very expensive. Once you enter the hotel youre spending even more money because they have some magic quest which you have to buy because besides the water park and the arcade thats the only other entertainment. The arcade is very nice and big but the price are ridiculous! My son spent $30 and received a tiny ball. The water park is nice but the chlorine smell stays with you for days plus if you dont get there once they open you have zero chance of getting a seat. We only had breakfast and it was ok. We also had a fire alarm go off at 8 am and it took forever to shut off. Overall the rooms were nice and the hotel is nice but its a lot of money and not enough free entertainment.
