“Good central location for a sightseeing trip”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

Two couples stayed here. The staff was thoughtful enough to give us rooms next to each other. The rooms were comfortable enough and each had a balcony. Unfortunately some sort of machine outside periodically made noise throughout the night. There was free coffee and tea in the lobby all day. Each room had a coffee maker. Panera's is on the ground floor; we enjoyed our breakfast there.

This hotel was in the perfect spot to visit Oakland and downtown Pittsburgh. We left one car while we went sightseeing. We did not use the hotel's shuttle but it would have been available to take us to spots in Oakland.

I think we got good value for our money.

Okay I have 2 kids at PITT. I have been going back and forth for 4 years and will continue for another 3 at the very least. We usually stay at the Hilton Garden but we could not get a reservation so we stayed at this place. It is a Quality Inn. You do not buy a Toyota and expect the performance of a Lexus. It is the same with this hotel. Yes it is older, yes the carpet is like indoor outdoor, and the walls are stucco. Before tax it is roughly $100 a night with FREE PARKING. The Hilton would be at least $170 a night more for this weekend. I am betting it is $100 more then this hotel on any night you chose. Plus you then have to pay for parking. Sticking with the Quality INN it is clean, and basic. We really did not hear that much noise. The AC/HEAT will make noise when it turns on but I slept through it. The furniture is dated, the bed not as plush, plastic cups, no fridge, an no free breakfast. Is that bothers you then pay at least $100 to $150 more a night, enjoy a better bed, glass cups, maybe a fridge, free breakfast, and have to wait for a valet to get your car. Ironically 2 weeks ago we stayed in a 5 star hotel in downtown Pittsburgh for over $400 a night that had ripped lamp shades, 2 broken phones, and chipped furniture.

So in summary. The room is clean and basic. You can still walk to the PITT campus. You have free parking, and a Pannaeras on the ground floor. Considering the price my only real negative was I think the bath towels could be a little larger.

If you are there to see your kids at PITT, and just looking for a place to shower and sleep this is fine. If you want to pay to park, and be a little more plush there are 2 other hotels in the area but be prepared to pay around 2X or 3X more.

Room Tip: Odd floors have ice machines. Could be a plus or minus for some.

I'm glad you were able to stay with us during your recent trip to Pittsburgh. Although your regular hotel was booked, I'm glad we were able to accommodate you.

If you're returning to the hotel in the future, ask for a room with two double beds. Those rooms all come with a microfridge and are larger than the single rooms. Since we're not a full service hotel, we unfortunately don't offer glass cups in our rooms. But, we're proud to offer free parking and the attached Panera Bread Café.

Something to note: we've already replaced furniture in about 50% of our rooms so far. New carpet and more new furniture will be installed by the end of the year.

Thanks again for the review.

See you next time!

Pros:
Close to University of Pittsburgh, UPMC etc, they provide an hourly shuttle to all these places for free, parking is free. Bed is sagging and old, but the sheets appear to be clean, they have soft pillows. There is a Panera Bread near by for your breakfast needs. They have free coffee in the lobby.

Cons:
There is no vent/exhaust in the bath room!!!! If more than one person is staying good luck with smelling their toilet odors :). If you call the front desk the usual answer is maintenance will only come after 9 AM in the morning. Then I got the truthful answer from one front desk person that there is NO vent/exhaust in the bath room.
The corridors and the room are old just painted over. The corridor carpets are old, smelly.

Recommendation:
For another 20 to 30 dollars you can get a better [cleaner] hotel in the same area and get free breakfast but you will pay $14 for car park. If you are single and want to save money it is okay, if with more than one person and want a cleaner hotel look else where.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts about the hotel on Tripadvisor.com. I'm glad you chose to stay with us during your trip to Pittsburgh.

We do actually have a bathroom ventilation system. Instead of fans in the bathroom (such as the kind one might have in their home), the Quality Inn uses what is called a passive ventilation system. Many hotels actually employ this kind of system- vent fans on the roof pull air from the bathroom vents. I checked with our maintenance team (who starts daily at 9:00 a.m.) after reading your review and all roof fans are in proper working order. I do apologize we don't have a more direct ventilation system.

Instead of offering a free breakfast, there is a Panera Bread Café located inside the hotel. And, we're proud to be the only hotel in the area that offers free parking.

When you're back in town, we'd love to have you again!

In our USA tour, we booked here on the 4th July.
Although a bit far from the city center, it was all very well, even though is an impersonal hotel as you find in USA.
Nothing extremely good, you went in. No breakfast.
You can go there but nothing to write home about

The staff are very friendly and readily to help. For instance, they gave me instant / practical advices and warmly assistance regarding electrifying my car, how to pay my fine of speeding as a foreigner, and how to utilize their free printing / faxing services...etc.

For a first-time traveler to the U.S. like me, their services have not only truly signified the spirits of the friendly American culture, but also signaled the premium quality of their staff.

In addition to its top-notch service quality, the location is also very good for traveling around Pittsburgh, and even to New York. For example, if you want to take an over-night bus to New York (say: gotobus), the bus stataion is within walking distance to this hotel. It really saved me the worry for walking alone in the dark at mid-night for a long time to reach the bus station.

I truly appreciate their kindly assistance, and would like to recommend Quality Inn University Center to everyone who is about to pay a visit to Pittsburgh.

Room Tip: The rooms on the second floor and the fifth floor are pretty good. The views are fantastic; you coul...

My husband was in the hospital for two weeks, the shuttle service to and from the hospital was excellent, evening female driver excellent, as well as the early morning male driver; So friendly and helpful.
The room was always clean, and I felt safe on the 7th floor being alone, it was a concern..The Panara Bread was wonderful as I did not have to leave the Hotel. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and know they would be well satisfied.
Appreciation for the special rates connecting to the hospital cannot be expressed.
Thank you so much.

My children and I found this hotel to be very comfortable, clean, and friendly. The staff was wonderful! We used the shuttle service the inn provides to get to the VA hospital. This service was a huge bonus for us. Great food (Panera Bread) on the ground floor as well. I would certainly recommend this Quality Inn to everyone and we will definitely stay here again ourselves. Its an inexpensive, clean and friendly place to stay in Pittsburgh.
