“Great Place to Stay Near University of Pittsburgh”
Reviewed July 28, 2011

Stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of June. Its an older hotel but very accommodating. The first three days we were there we did not need to take our car anywhere. The university, restaurants, Schenley Park, Phipps Conservatory and a host of other places to explore are all within walking distance. Took the bus downtown one day which worked out very well. Panera Bread is located on the bottom floor of the hotel which was very handy for a bite to eat during the day.

We were visiting Pittsburgh for a friends birthday celebration. This hotel was near the party location, but not near the downtown or tourist area. The Staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel could use some remodeling, but the room was clean and a decent size. The room could use some paint touch ups and there was some minor wallpaper flaws. Generally the stay was fine and the price was expected for this level of hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms in the rear

I stayed here for several days for a business trip. We booked here through Expedia - it actually cost less to book this hotel + airfare than it did to only book the airfare.

When I walked in to the first room, the smell was the first issue -- some combination of mold/mildew, dirty carpet, and public washroom. I didn't want to touch anything. The carpet is old, the bedding worn, wallpaper dirty (I do not want to think of the yellow stains by the toilet), patio door very old and rickety, I went to check out a colleagues room and it wasn't as bad. I went to the front desk and asked to switch rooms. They told me there were none available and sent a cleaning lady. It did not exactly help, other than add a cleaning chemical-smell to the mix. When it was time for bed, I removed the bedspread, wrapped a towel around the pillow and put a towel on the section of the bed that I was going to sleep on. I looked around the edges of the mattress under the sheets and saw no signs of bugs. When I woke up the next morning, I had bug bites on my legs that were not there when I went to bed. I don't know what kind of bug they were from. I told the front desk, and they initially assured me that there were no bugs, that they spray regularly... that may be, but did not explain these bites. They did not seem inclined to do much about it. I asked to be moved to a different room at least. She went to speak to the manager and moved me to an upgraded room. The new room was considerably cleaner and less gross. I did not get any further bites.

The whole hotel is very old and run down. There seems to be a big discrepancy in the state of different rooms. The wireless internet service was okay. The AC worked okay, but was noisy. Noise from other rooms was not an issue (potentially drowned out by the AC)

We stayed while in town to help our student move into an apartment. We were being budget-conscious , so the free parking was a plus. The beds were comfortable, the room was clean, the shower was strong. There was 1 sink inside the bathroom and 1 sink just outside the bathroom door. Unfortunately, the noise from the traffic on the street outside was really noticeable during the night--next time I would bring earplugs. We didn't hear noise from adjoining rooms like other reviewers noted. The decor is a mish mash of colors & patterns, but that's cosmetic. Everything worked the way it was supposed to. Check-in & check-out were pleasant & efficient. We would stay again for a short stay.

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the street

Our room was old but adequately clean, with comfortable beds. The AC was slightly noisy but worked well, the internet worked well too. It is a pleasant walk (around a mile) to the Oakland "downtown" and to the Pitt campus, and they apparently run a free shuttle (we didn't use it, so call to confirm) to Carnegie-Mellon. Add the free parking and it is hard to imagine a better value.

Little to say. If you only sleep there it will be adequate. Everything about the hotel is OLD.' The staff is nice enough (mostly students from nearby U. of Pitt) and you do get a free newspaper. If it is not strictly business on a tight budget stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: Has free parking

Hotel has impeccable service standard. Staff goes out of way to make your stay comfortable. I was there with my son for graduation ceremony. Hotel has free van service every one hour. At the day of graduation there was also a Pittsburgh marathon and roads were block from 6 in morning. Staff went out of their way and ran the van service at 15 minutes interval and took us to cllege through back roads and also picked us up again. Front desk was ever so helpful. Had a good bakery cafe . Though rooms require some renovation.

Room Tip: take a room on higher floor and back side.
