Walking in the place looked promising, nicely decorated and a good atmosphere. However, standing around for several minutes for a hostess to return and seat us should have been our first clue. Not sure what was happening because the place seemed well-staffed and it wasn't very crowded at 4:00 on a Sunday, but you'd have thought it was packed and they were understaffed by the service we got. We ordered our appetizer first, but it didn't come out until our meal came. Only one plate of food came out, and we had a hard time finding our waitress to tell her (someone else dropped off the food). The food was good but nothing special.

Server disappeared for thirty minutes, came back with the explanation that she had a large table elsewhere. Gee, thanks.

Food is very average Mexican fare. Nothing to write home about.

Wow - there actually is an affordable restaurant downtown. Went before a show and had drinks and food with friends. The waitress could not have been nicer, the food was very authentic and HOT (the way I ordered it) and couldn't believe the price. Couldn't finish my meal, which is rare for me. Met the manager and the owner, both were very nice. I eat out a lot in the burgh and I could not have had a nicer experience. Would highly recommend.

Wanting to eat somewhere near our hotel, we decided on Las Velas. Peach margarita was excellent as were fajitas. We had a window seat overlooking the square - nice thing to do on a Friday afternoon.

We enjoyed our experience at Las Velas and would go again despite the slow service.

The food is very good. The chips and salsa (not free, but we knew that going in, though) were good as well; the salsa has a nice kick to it and excellent flavor. I had the Mahi Mahi tacos and highly recommend those. My wife had the shrimp tacos which were also very good. The spanish rice was also very tasty. The refried beans were a bit strange; they were spicy (I've never had spicy refried beans before). Overall, we were quite pleased with the quality of the food.

The service was a bit slow. The hostess was very nice and seated us quickly, and she was also seen throughout the restaurant helping the servers. Our server, though, also seemed to be the bartender; he was constantly behind the bar making drinks rather than in the vicinity of our table. As such, our drinks were empty and when we needed things, he wasn't around. I'm not sure if this is standard at the restaurant, but it didn't work very well.

The location is great, but it can make the restaurant easy to miss. The restaurant is on the second floor, so it can be easy to miss the sign & staircase up to the restaurant. We had a table along the window, though, and had a view of Market Square throughout the meal, which was nice.

Despite the service that wasn't quite what we'd expect, we will go back to Las Velas. The food made up for it.
