Owner description: Situated in the heart of Oakland, Schenley Park has come to be Pittsburgh’s civic park. Created in 1889 with land donated by heiress Mary Schenley, the park now contains 456 acres of trails, woods, and attractions. A daily destination for university students, business-people, and outdoor enthusiasts, the park also hosts major annual events such as the Vintage Grand Prix and the Pittsburgh Race for the Cure. Visitors to Schenley Park can spend a morning at the remarkable Phipps Conservatory, enjoy lunch and a concert at the Schenley Park Cafe and Visitor Center, relax on Flagstaff Hill, play a round at the Bob O’Connor Golf Course, head to the Schenley Oval Sportsplex for ice skating or summer sports, or take a dip in the swimming pool. And of course, the trails offer a refreshing and convenient escape from the city. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy restored the Schenley Park Cafe and Visitor Center in 2001 and operates the space today with event and culinary partners, Eat'n Park Hospitality Group. In 2005, the Parks Conservancy worked with City of Pittsburgh crews to rehabilitate the Phipps Run stream channel that stretches from behind the Visitor Center down to Panther Hollow Lake. Restoration of the Panther Hollow Watershed is continuous, with the ultimate goal of restoring Panther Hollow Lake to a water quality that will once again allow for recreational use.

Schenley Park is a beautiful park tucked away in busy Oakland. Several charity walks and runs are held in this park. The grounds are very nicely maintained and it is family and pet friendly.

“Home to an annual event that is rare in all the world.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2014

In its own rite, Schenley Park is a beautiful place to visit. When I was a child living in Pittsburgh, we went on many picnics in Schenley Park. And it's still a great place for a quiet picnic during most of the summer.
But, for about ten days every July, it takes on a whole different attitude! Suddenly, it's crowded and noisy! The park is the setting of The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, the culmination of a variety of fundraising events that benefit the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley School. If you visit on the right weekend in July, you will see an incredible array of vintage racers challenging the winding, undulating, stone wall-lined roads of the park. This is one of the very few races still held on public roads anywhere. This makes the racing much more of a challenge to the drivers because of the crown to the pavement, and the lack of camber in the road surface.
In addition to the racing, countless car clubs come for the event, displaying privately-owned cars that you won't often see anywhere else. Just wandering through the parking lot will make the car-lovers among you crazy with envy.
And, on top of all the fun the event provides, the whole thing is being done for the benefit of deserving charities. Many associated fundraising events take place throughout the ten day period, including "ride-alongs" on the final Saturday and Sunday at Schenley Park. I can't even imagine how many people volunteer time and resources for this event. It's amazing to me to see how well-run and efficient the whole deal is.
This was our third trip back to Pittsburgh for the Vintage Grand Prix since our daughter and son-in-law have been living in the area. And, this event just keeps getting better.

Outdoor "food court". Free WIFI. Museums and colleges near by. Quite place to relax. There is no shopping though.

“Great spot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2014 via mobile

I sat on a bench in the golf course in the shade. There was a great view of Oakland. It was nice to watch the golfers; there was a fence around the benches so no stray golfballs could hit me. Great place.

“Quiet space”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2014

This was a great walk for us, initially thought it was just like any other park to have a lazy afternoon in but when we got up near the conservatory and turned around we were treated to a beautiful view of the University area.
