The food is good and the beer is solid, but the setting is what you came for. Situated in a desanctified church, it's a nice start to an evening that may land you in the nearby Strip District.

You'll love what they've done with the alter.

The food here is not great, but it is not terrible either. Go there for the beer and the atmosphere. The Church is located in a former Catholic Church, and, when I lived in Pittsburgh, it was always a rave with out-of-town guests. My mother, a Catholic, loved the sense of rebellion she felt eating in a church. And the beer? The beer is very good. My favorite? The Mious Monk Dunkel. As for food, your best bets are the pizzas and the pierogies. The pierogies are among the best in the city, and you haven't been to Pittsburgh unless your visit includes some pierogies. The Church is also a great place to take kids, because there's so much room in there that no one will care that they are running up and down the aisles.

We stopped for dinner at Church Brew Works after visiting the Pittsburgh Zoo. This was my second time visiting, but the first time was several years ago. As a recovering Catholic, it definitely takes a few minutes to get over the building, which has fermentation tanks on the altar, and a full bar and restaurant where pews once stood. The old church is beautiful though, and makes for a nice environment. We had the specialty pierogies of the day as an appetizer, which were filled with roasted red peppers and topped with balsamic dressing. They were very good, but you may have to put in two orders, because you only get four pierogies ($7). The pipe organ ale was deliciously hoppy ($4.32). They nailed the traditional Pittsburgh salad with "kobe" roast beef (steak) and fries ($15). We also had an order of homemade potato chips, which had a really good seasoning on top ($4). Overall I recommend stopping at Church Brew Works if you are in the area!

You have to go at least once just so you can drink beer in church! The atmosphere is great, the pizzas are great (rest of the food a bit pricey) and the beer's are okay. However, if the chocolate chili stout is there, you must TRY it!
