“Best Mediterranean comfort foot ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2012

This is the sort of place where the core menu probably hasn't change in twenty years and you are extremely greatful. Fresh smoked babaganoush or stuffed grape leaves or the simple burger....everything here is executed with care. Both the meat eater and the vegetarian in your group will think you picked the restaurant to favor them.

The warm grilled pita before the meal is sirved with both butter and seasoned olive oil on the side. Skip it....you will be so pleasantly suprised that they can elevate such a "throw away" at most resurants into something so yummy you will want to eat it all. The sherry laced she crab is a hearty choice and always tastes indulgently good. A bowl will easily fill a lighter eater to the point where they may not be able to finish.

Skip with the middle eastern selections as they are best. They also offer an ample sandwich and burger selection. The seasonal and fish dishes are amazing and the desserts are best ordered to share. The chef is very tolerant of substitutions when they are needed.

A cozy place to return to again and again

“Still the Best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2012

I agree that things have changed a bit at Amel's. Portions, while still quite ample, are no longer humongous (but we still brought home leftovers for lunch next day). And the bread does have that stiff as cardboard texture now, rather than the soft, warm aromatic Pita we used to love so well, but I believe this is still consistantly the best restaurant in Pittsburgh. We were there again last night for dinner, and everything was just right.

I had the Classic Moroccan Couscous with huge tender, flavorful lamb and chicken cubes, beans and other vegetables cooked perfectly into a delectable stew, and spooned over semolina. My fellow diners had the Gyro Platter, Chicken Empress and Lamb Kabob, and there were no complaints from them either. Our appetizer was the Red Pepper and Feta Hummus-- so delicious that it renders the Pita change almost imperceptible. Everyone enjoyed a different one of the side salads, each fresh and lightly dressed. I don't know why but Amel's Feta just tastes better than anywhere else (except possibly Mykonos).

The beer is cold, fresh, delicious and priced competitively, with many on tap. Desserts are legendary, enormous and sharing is allowed. Try the Carrot Cake. There are daily specials and some Italian, American and Seafood entrees on the regular menu in case you have people with you who won't eat Mediterranean food. Prices are slightly higher than an average Pittsburgh neighborhood place, but not bad at all for a meal this special. Total tab for 4 with drinks @ $97.00 plus tip. Service is so friendly and efficient-- it's a pleasure to leave this staff a tip.

Location is not really accessible except by car, so if you are visiting Pittsburgh and want to try a really great restaurant where service, food and value are topnotch, call a cab to take you to Amel's in the near North Hills. Don't really understand why this place gets so few reviews. It's truly an overlooked gem.

“My favorite all-time restaurant!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2012

Amel's is just the best of everything you could ask for in a restaurant. Great food, terrific service, neighborhood feel, upscale, casual, family, Greek, Italian, wonderful bar, always great food, etc. I could go on and on. My favorite place to eat when I lived in Pittsburgh, and now that I live in Virginia, Amel's is my favorite place to eat in Pittsburgh. I always visit each trip back!

“An old favorite -- downsized...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2012

I've been going to Amel's for over 30 years -- loving the huge salads and large plates of hummus and baba ganouge...While the food still tastes the same, the portions have been downsized...Not a bad thing when ordering individually, but not so great if you're with a crowd...We've always ordered the dips as an appetizer -- and hey came on dinner sized plates with a basket of hot pita...Now they come on salad-sized plates -- too small to serve 4 -- and the pita is no longer the wonderful home-baked variety, but tastes more like the grocery store stuff...The salads have been halved in size -- no longer sized for dinner, but more like a side-dish...My daughter and I usually order the shish-ka-bob salad -- and were very disappointed with the 4 small pieces of lamb sitting on top of a small bed of Amel's signature salad...While delicious, it definitely wasn't worth $14.99 -- $8 more than the regular salad without lamb...At $2 per cube, I think I'll bypass the meat next time...If there is a next time...Matter of fact, their standard shish-ka-bob is $20 for one skewer and some rice...Amel's has raised the price on almost everything on their menu by $5-7 -- definitely more than I want to spend for good, but not exceptional, Middle Eastern food...
