Had a wonderful lunch in this romantic old stone building surrounded by a patio and gardens. The Taglialini was, hands down, the best dish I had in our 4 days in Pittsburgh. Great flavors! Portions are small, but I don’t consider that a problem. Take time to have a glass of wine, and maybe dessert and coffee afterwards. Would definitely go back.

Had lunch here during a visit to the art museum and walking the grounds. It is really lovely. Good food and good service.

I see that another reviewer warns about the construction under way as of June 2014. The new visitor center is due to open in July, so hopefully that will be over soon. This may be my favorite restaurant ever in the whole world. They have really, really good food. Really good. And I love the setting on the grounds of the Frick Estate, tucked between the art museum and the mansion. They serve creative "locavore" cuisine and the helpings are nice and SMALL. Yes, I said SMALL. I like small helpings. This is strictly a lunch place and I appreciate that they give you deliciously dainty amounts ... so you have room for dessert. There is limited space inside, so be sure to book if you want an indoor table during the construction. The outside seating in the summer is part of this place's charm, but if you go on a weekday, it could be noisy right now, and if you go on a weekend, booking is advisable because they are very busy for brunch. They serve a wonderful tea between 2:30 pm and 5 pm. Be sure to share because it is too much for one person who likes SMALL helpings. They do have a full bar. So in summary, if you are looking for huge helpings of cheap mainstream food, this is totally not for you. If you are looking for exquisite bites that mingle unique ingredients in revelatory combinations, this is THE spot in Pittsburgh.

Especially in the summer months, this is a charming and pleasant place to have lunch. If the weather is nice, I highly recommend sitting outside, either under the awning or at one of the tables with umbrellas. (You'll get more light and sun at those tables, but the awning gives more complete shade and even a touch of warmth on a breezy day.) The food is nicely thought-out and presented, with an attempt at being up-to-date yet comforting. For example: at a recent meal, I had a beet salad to start, followed by pasta with a rich, creamy sauce with wild mushrooms and fresh green peas. Both were excellent, though I did find the pasta a bit too rich for my usual lunch -- though that's purely a personal taste. My companion had a really delectable she-crab soup that was easily as good as any seafood chowder I've ever tasted, and the daily fish special, wahoo with another rich and creamy sauce. We were too full for dessert, alas, as the ones being served to our neighbors looked gorgeous. The service was relaxed yet attentive enough, and very pleasant. I'm thinking about getting a membership to the Frick just to be able to make reservations -- which, by the way, are essential on a busy weekend. Since it was a weekend, there was none of the construction noise mentioned here, which was a bonus.

Eat inside & make a reservation to do so until the construction of the new admission hall is finished. The food ranges from good to fantastic; check out the chef's specials. The soups are consistently good & always available. The menu has a few of each category of food: appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees, & desserts. The service is good if not speedy. Because a lot of people are in a small space, it's not the quietest restaurant in town.
