Description: Penn Brewery began brewing craft beer back in 1986, making us one of the earliest pioneers in the American craft movement. We started out brewing classic lagers and German beer styles, adhering to the strict quality standards of the 16th-century Bavarian Reinheitsgebot purity laws. As we’ve expanded our lineup in recent years to include IPAs and other contemporary styles like chocolate and pumpkin beers, we’ve stayed true to our quality craftsmanship, brewing all of our beers by hand with top-tier barley and hops. We’re proud to say that Penn beers have won a total of nineteen Great American Beer Festival® and World Beer Cup® medals. Penn Brewery’s restaurant serves “ethnic-Pittsburgh” fare including wurst, schnitzel, pierogi, and goulash alongside contemporary Pittsburgh favorites, like the "French fry salad," flatbreads, and sandwiches. In the spirit of our classic Pittsburgh theme, our menu emphasizes fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Penn is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. A lovely cobblestone biergarten is open seasonally. Private party bookings are also available.

The food is good and there's enough variety to please most everyone! It was loud, even downstairs away from the live band, but we enjoyed ourselves. Our waitress was sweet and very accommodating, and she let us sit and talk as long as we wanted after we finished. Good first experience!

Thanks for your review! We are glad to hear you enjoyed yourself at Penn Brewery and are looking forward to seeing you again. Next time, try stopping in on a Thursday for our “Brats ‘n’ Brews” in our outdoor biergarten. We feature a new specialty brew each week!

We tried this place because it is rated highly in the AAA Tour Book and was within walking distance of our North Shore hotel. Arrived to incredibly loud and not terribly well performed rock music -- turns out that bands perform there occasionally. They wanted to seat us right in front of the band and we (and others) declined. Still very hard to carry on a conversation. Food was nothing special, the four of us agreed. Happiest person was the guy who enjoys craft beers, although he said that the two he tried were simply "OK." Cannot recommend.

We had reservations & when we arrived on time we were told our table wasn't ready so we waited another 15 minutes. Once we were seated we were told who our waiter was, that person greeted us & said he'd be right with us, 10 minutes passed & the hostess came & said the waiter told her to check on us. We then had a waitress take our orders. The food was good & service OK. The atmosphere was loud & difficult to converse. Bartender was efficient, beer was good! Will return.

Four of us went to Penn Brewery on a Wednesday night. We arrived about 830 and a decent--if loud--small German band was playing.

The food was good, not great, and the wide array of housemade beers (10 in all) were drinkable but not particularly memorable.

A couple things; if a band is playing (and they have music regularly) it will be very difficult to carry on a conversation. If the focus of your visit is food and camaderie, then you may wish to look elsewhere. Second, don't plan on a late night. At 930, we were informed it was last call...while their website says the serve 'til midnight. It was quiet in the restaurant, and my guess is that the staff just wanted to call it a night.

The location is easy to get to and parking is no problem. The brews are not that extraordinary and the food is only average. The service is fine, as is the environment. I actually prefer the Church Brew Works.
