Wholey's is a local, family owned, Pittsburgh treasure ... providing fresh seafood, meats, poultry, produce, and grocery ... both retail and wholesale throughout the tri-state area. People come from far and wide to shop and eat. There is a counter to buy cooked seafood & sides for take-out or eating in upstairs dining room. There is even a fresh sushi counter with chef on-hand to fulfill orders. Dining area is very casual with paper on the tables. Wholey's is a fun, bustling atmosphere with market, model train overhead, and groceries. They are famous for their fish sandwiches here in Western Pennsylvania, served on also local, famous Mancini bakery rolls. In business since 1912. I can't imagine anyone getting a bad sandwich here since we have been coming here for over 20 years without issue. Wholey family members are present and visible throughout the store ... if there were to be a problem, they should be told. They will make it right ... the customer is always right here, no question! Servers and cashiers on the cooked food line are not always the friendliest sort, but they are efficient, fast and used to processing an enormous number of impatient people everyday! Lines for the cooked foot tend to be long especially in fair weather on weekends, but they move fast ... do not be intimidated, any wait is worth it. Prior to Christmas, the crowds can be mind-boggling ... so for your first time, recommend coming on a weekday away from the holidays when you can avoid the intense bustle and get a better view of all the market offerings. Bathrooms are available in the basement, but must be accessed by stairs in back of the seafood market next to the fish tanks. Seems to me there might be a hidden elevator, but don't count on it. Bathrooms have never been attractive or pleasant to use, but if ya gotta go, ya gotta go. They are small, tight. Improvements have been made over the years, but this is still a low priority for them ... basics are provided and that is that. However, there are fresh flowers at the sink to at least bring a smile to your face. Educationally, this is a great location for children to learn about fish, see the fish and lobsters in tanks, see the displays of many types of fish, watch staff clean and filet the fresh fish ... ask questions of the employees. There is a model train circulating overhead which is fun to watch among other things. All staff are happy to answer questions and will even give cooking tips upon request. You can order gift packages to be shipped nationwide from $10-40 for 1-2 day delivery. Free shipping is available for orders over $200. We love this place and hope you do, too!

Management response:Responded November 8, 2016

Hello, Richard. Sorry to hear of your bad experience. We do weigh the fish on each of our sandwiches for consistency. Maybe you were expecting our one pound Wholey Whaler made of Whiting and instead got our half-pound Icelandic Cod sandwich or half-pound whiting. As for our bread, we do get it fresh daily from the bakery next door - Mancini's. I'll be sure to pass your concerns along to our kitchen manager, though.

Stopped here for the first time on a Thursday afternoon was not very busy son got sushi which only cost $6.50 was a great price for the amount. My husband and I each got the crab cake sandwich which was out of this world there were hardly any fillers and tasted so fresh our order also included a side of fried chips, side of macaroni and cheese and 3 drinks our total was only $26 this was unbelievable for what all we got. My father got the Whaler sandwich which was 1lb of batter dip whiting and was so huge he was able to take over 1/2 home to later make another sandwhich. There was a large seating area on a second floor where we were able to enjoy our meals before exploring the market. This little gem is a must stop if you are in Pittsburgh is located in the Strip District which is also a greay place to walk around and enjoy the other little shops.

There must be something special about this place as there was a line both inside and outside so I decided to try their lobster roll which was made fresh in front of you. Service can be a little faster as the girl making my order is being trained. The roll has the proper ratio of mayo and lobster. It was a decent size but enough for my small appetite

Love the chicken wings. My daughters love the fish sandwich. Shop at the market after dining. Great selection of seafood.
