My husband treated me to a wonderful Valentine's Day dinner here last weekend. He had already been to the restaurant; so he previewed the great...and the not so great...aspects of it with me.
Start with the most exceptional part of this seafood restaurant - the view. The two-sided glass windows showcase an amazing evening view of downtown Pittsburgh. You will truly lose yourself (and where you are) when you take in this view.
The next exceptional aspect of the restaurant is the food. A myriad of fresh fish is flown in daily to the restaurant, where some very accomplished chefs create interesting and tasty menu items. The portion sizes are not huge; which they shouldn't need to be. But, unfortunately, some of our dinner party still equated prices to quantity; not quality.
The most unexceptional part of Monterey Bay Fish Grotto is the decor. The restaurant management created a very interesting ambiance sometime in the late 70's; and then decided that updating it approximately 30 years later just wasn't necessary. I hope they re-think that decision sometime in the near future.
Bottom line - I would go there again; if only for the city view and the food. But I think I'll eat in the bar, where the ambiance of the city lights is more than enough.
