When you visit a Mt Washington Restaurant, the real reward is the view of the Pittsburgh skyline, especially in the evening when everything is sparkling with lights. The food at Monterey Bay Fish Grotto is decent seafood, however none of our meals were very memorable and it was what I may call standard in terms of cuisine. It's not inexpensive, s you might want to consider driving up to take your picture and then heading down again for some good food.

Went here with a few friends for New Year's and was expecting great things based on all of the positive reviews. For starters, the view is fantastic (assuming you are seated somewhere that can see out the windows). Being on Mt. Washington is one thing, but being however many stories about street level that the restaurant is makes for a truly spectacular view. That being said, their entire menu and wine list are extremely overpriced, as you can only tack on so much additional cost for the view. The service was also surprisingly poor. We received our appetizers fairly quickly, but our soups and salads never came, and it took nearly an hour after receiving our appetizers to get our main courses. The waitress apologized for our soups and salads not coming, and offered to bring our main courses back while they made those up for us quickly. We had been seated at around 10:30pm, and it was already 11:45pm at that point so it really didn't interest us to wait longer. It would have been nice if they had done something for us such as a free dessert or appetizers, but no such offer was made. The restaurant was already half-emptied out by 11pm, so there was really no excuse for the delay of our food. When the food did eventually come, it was actually quite good. We have eaten at many restaurants on Mt. Washington for New Year's, and they have all done something special except for Monterey Bay (no noise makers, hats, champagne toast at midnight, etc). It was a very poor atmosphere for celebration, and we were disappointed by their lack of enthusiasm. For a restaurant with great potential, our group was all very disappointed. For the nearly $100/person that we spent, we absolutely didn't get our money's worth, and likely will not be back.

The Monterey Bay Fish Grotto is on the 10th floor of a building, itself sitting on the edge of a huge cliff, quite something, and it overlooks the point of land home of Pittsburgh and the 3 rivers, a totally spectacular setting and view. You've probably guessed we really preferred a window table.

I called the restaurant Friday afternoon and was nicely told all they offer is "first come first serve." Our daughter in law was also calling and hadn't had any luck except that there were late reservation openings if we wanted to change from 6 pm at 9 pm which she thought we wouldn't be interested in. We weren't disappointed but suspected to most likely not get a window table.

When we arrived, we were overwhelmed by the restaurant greeting for being the 50th anniversary couple. The maître de told us immediately she had a very special window table for us. The maître de, coat check girl, table waiter and 2 managers recognized us by name and congratulated us on our 50th and made sure we had a truly royal experience and - - - the very gracious waiter used my wife's camera to take our pictures.

It was a very beautiful setting, way up high overlooking Pittsburgh at night with all the lights downtown, in the suburbs and overlooking the 3 rivers and the restaurant was humming with activity.

When we ordered desert, my wife wasn't sure she could hold any so I asked how large the servings were. The waiter said "one would be satisfactory for both of you." Then he brought our order and said it was complementary of the restaurant. On the plate the words "Happy 50th Anniversary" were beautifully written in drizzled chocolate. The desert was a large piece of pie made of combined cream cheese and angles food cake - - - yummy yummy.

That was an experience too good to be true but - - - it was true. We didn't leave any crumbs from that desert as you might imagine. Would we recommend this to our friends - - - ABSOLUTELY!

Here's the 1,2,3s...
1. Prices are high for what you get, but remember that you are paying for the view.

2. The views are amazing. Make sure you also go down to the bar and check out the view there too.

3. Food is top quality, fish is amazing and very fresh, service is attentive and very efficient. You'll have a great meal!
