If you like posh decor and white tablecloths, this place is not for you. BUT, if you like wonderful, fresh, and unique pan-Asian food, run to Spice Island. Do not be deterred by the lackluster exterior. My melt-in-your-mouth chicken curry with coconut rice and small side salad was $11.50. I could barely finish it. My friend could not finish her huge platter of pad Thai which was overflowing with shrimp at $10. Order the hot or iced tea of the day with unlimited refills or any one of the many other interesting teas. There is a full bar, too. Service was quick and attentive. This is a real treasure in the university/medical district of Oakland!

We were looking forward to Spice Island since we knew they had some Burmese food on the menu, however we were mostly underwhelmed. We got the eggplant purée appetizer. It was Ok, a little salty. We asked to maybe switch out the naan for thousand layer bread and we were rebuffed. The dinners were both good (java fried rice, Burmese noodle dish), but not great. Portion size was really good, we had plenty of leftovers. Service was good. Overall it was decent, but we not be rushing back.

It might be a little hidden.
Taka the path less traveled and try this place over a chain !!
Couldn't decide between Pad Thai and Java Fried Rice.
Opted for the Java Fried Rice since I had never heard of it before. IT WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD DELISH.
The food comes in one size GINORMOUS.
The price for the amount if food you get is fantastic.
It's a cute little spot.
If you are in Oakland and want something delicious and enough for 3 meals .... come here asap.

Very good experience for all members of the family last night. I had the chicken pad Thai which was very yummy, my husband had the Java Rice. Very good but watch out!!! Very hot!
We will definitely be back!

The outside appearance of Spice Island Tea House may turn some folks away, and if so they have missed out on a pure gem of a restaurant. A mix of Pan-Asian dishes that are off-the-charts great. The place is always full of diners - which should tell you something right away. Inexpensive and a pure delight.
