“Very Decent Stay in Pittsburgh”
Reviewed July 20, 2014

We stayed at the Hyatt House this past weekend and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the property. Our suite was quite well appointed with large bathroom, great sitting area with huge couch with ottomans, kitchen and plenty of space. The location is right on the river next to many attractions and eating establishments. The hot breakfast in the morning features an omlette station...no powdered eggs here! Our room was on the main street side of the building...with some late night "noise". I suggest a room not facing the street. The hotel staff was helpful and friendly. They offer a local shuttle (4 miles or less) for free. We were going farther than that and taxi service is rare in the city. We learned quickly that you must call 30 minutes in advance if you want a taxi to pick you up.

This hotel is very clean, the room was spacious, and the staff was extremely friendly! Breakfast was included in the price of the room. The breakfast was good and included made to order omelets. We only stayed for one night and it was a monday. Being a Monday there wasn't much to do later at night (after 11pm). Had it been a weekend the nightlife would've been better as there is a Hofbrau Haus and some Irish bar right next to the hotel. I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a hotel in the south side works area. Also close to stage AE if you plan on seeing a concert there.

My company held our mid-year sales meeting in house and had a more than great experience. The rooms were beautiful, the meeting space was perfect and everything was extremely conveniently located to shopping, dining and nightlife. Being from a small company, expenses are highly important when it comes to planning a meeting. The FULL hot breakfast (which is included with room stays) worked out better than ever! The free and easy wi-fi connections also worked out to our benefit! We were given exceptionally reasonable room rates and were especially pleased with sales team member (Adam Kaufman) that made the planning process as easy as ever. All of our attendees enjoyed their stay and said that this was a wonderfully executed meeting - even better than our time spent in Cancun earlier in the year! That’s a very big compliment coming from a team that is more often in hotels than in their own homes. I would absolutely recommend the Hyatt House Pittsburgh South Side to anyone looking to stay in Pittsburgh!

Room Tip: All rooms are wonderful. Full suites.

We booked this hotel back in May for one night as a stop to rest and continue our long drive. We booked by calling the hotel on the day, but were apparently directed to their national number. A representative processed our booking (even signed us up for their loyalty program) and informed us that it was non-refundable, noncancellable booking which was fine with us as our plans were definite. We informed the representative to notate in our booking 'late arrival' as we expected to be in Pittsburgh after 10 or 11 pm depending on traffic (all of the booking details were in their system, and could still be there).

About an hour or so before we reached the hotel, we recieved a call from the hotel (actually multiple missed calls that we didn't hear as we had music on in the car). When my adult daughter answered the phone it turned out to be Hyatt House asking whether or not we were coming to the hotel and that they've been trying to call us (??). That was a first. When she answered him that we were actually not very far away, the caller wasn't satisfied with the answer and was quite brief with my daughter.

We thought the reception counter must be closing soon and that perhaps we kept them waiting (it was shortly after 11 pm at that time). We were puzzled as the representative who did our booking said they should be there 24/7 and also, we were not late for the estimated time we've given them. Most importantly, our booking was guaranteed with a credit card and was non-refundable anyway.

We arrive at the hotel exhausted, after driving 7+ hrs to find total chaos. We met the angry voice on the phone, one of the employees by the name of Cory. He was even more angry in person. He told us that he had other guests waiting for the room in case were weren't coming (?!). Sure enough, two gentlemen in business suits stood by the counter, looking frustrated that the hotel mishandled their booking. I explained to him that we specified 'late arrival', guaranteed the booking with a credit card, and booking wasn't refundable. The employee proceeded to basically telling me -very loudly- that he is actually doing us a favor by giving us a room as these gentlemen work for a company that brings them a lot of revenue. It was shocking to hear that.

Apparently, the hotel was overbooked and staff didn't have the skills (or the manners) to handle the situation in a professional and curteous way. Overbooking is never the customer's fault, it's the hotel's. The empoyee was acting like a bully, there is no other way to describe it. All of it was documented on their CCTV camera I'm sure.

Needless to say, after a happy graduation event, we had the worst night at the Hyatt House. We wanted to leave but were too tired to drive for one more mile and look for a hotel. In the morning, we skipped their breakfast and asked to talk to the GM. We were told that he wasn't available. We spoke to his assistant, who apologized and offered to take care of the bill, we thanked him but we opted to pay our own bill in full. We declined his offer because we thought that was not enough to rectify the situation, money was not the problem and nor was it the solution. He said that he heard about the incident and that it was going to be 'investigated and addressed'. We asked if they would communicate with us regarding the outcome, he said no, it will not be shared with us as it's an internal matter (!).

We received an email from the GM who was 'unavailable' when we were there, with the usual generic apology and an offer for a free one night stay. This was probably as insulting as what happened from his employee. Money doesn't fix everything. On a subsquent phone conversation with the assistant GM, he again reiterated that it's an internal matter. We never heard back again from them.

We are a well-travelled family who's quite familiar with the hotel business and booking procedures, etc. We've interacted with hoteliers from near and far, but never came across such blatant rudeness and lack of respect. We wouldn't generalize to all of the other Hyatt establishments, but our conclusion is that Pittsburgh Hyatt House is a hotel with an unhealthy, if not corrupt work cutlure that prefers to sweep their problems under the carpet than address them with fairness and transparency.

We will never go back to this hotel even if they offer us a thousand free nights.

Hyatt House in South Side is a very nice hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. It was clean and well staffed, overall we felt very safe and comfortable there.
There is a mandatory $14 valet parking fee per night, but it was nice to have the convenience of being met at the door, so no complaints there...just good to know.
The breakfast was nice enough, although I would have preferred half and half instead of creamer for my coffee in the morning. They made up for it with an omelet bar and all day coffee and tea.
The rooms were pleasant and the bed was comfy. We had a 1 bedroom suite with a sofa bed in the living room, so some people might not like that. As a family, it was nice to be able to put the kids on the sofa bed and have a separate bedroom and TV for the adults.
One of the best selling points on this hotel is the area. South Side is interesting and you can walk to all of it. Of course, if you don't want to walk, they will drive you or pick you up with the complimentary shuttle.
There are a lot of shops, restaurants and clubs that are mostly independently owned. There are some chains that have moved into the area, like REI (which has a free climbing wall for members) and the very nice Hofbrau Brewery next door.
The hotel is located on the Great Allegheny Passage, a hiking biking trail that goes from Pittsburgh to Washington DC. The waterfront has been recently rehabilitated from the old industrial steel mills to a very pleasant place to walk, bike, sit or even take a boat out. We saw water skiers and kayaks as well as tourist charters.
Also, the hotel is a short drive to Sandcastle Water Park and Kennywood Amusement Park, both fun and interesting parks with rides for all ages. We would have loved to use the complimentary hotel shuttle, but it only goes 4 miles from the hotel, so we were unable to use it for our day trips to the parks. It would be really great, if that were an option...hint hint.
I would recommend this hotel to families or adults wanting an urban escape.
We plan to return and bring our bikes next time.

Room Tip: ask for a room the overlooks the waterfront or one that faces the courtyard. The first night our wi...

Stayed two nights at Hyatt House, where they gave us a free late check-out. Staff was fabulous but the big plus was the room--we upgraded to a suite with a kitchenette. The kitchen included basic pots, pans, plates, etc. Prepared all of our meals in the room--a plus for healthy eaters like ourselves. We took advantage of local farmer markets and the Eagle grocery nearby. The hotel is at the base of the slopes and close to the Carson street shopping/entertainment area. Only caution: Pittsburgh regulates the sale of alcohol, so finding a nice bottle of wine is not easy. The Hyatt helped us out there too, as they sell decent California wines by the bottle at the downstairs bar.

Room Tip: Suites are nice. You might ask to be placed away from the street, as the street lights really glare.

Normally we stay at Shadyside Inn on the other side of town, but have been having issues with parking especially at night after coming back from baseball games. Decided to try a new part of town and that is how I found HYATT house. Fabulous hotel! Lovely clean suite with great bathroom and comfy beds. Lobby has little store, ATM and bar. Valet parking in their private "basement" garage was so stinking easy. Breakfast was great. The neighborhood could not be beat. I'm not kidding, there are more bicycles than cars in this section of South Side. Next door to German beer hall with good starchy comfort food. Across a very quiet street from a Cheesecake Factory, an Irish Pub and some shopping. Directly behind the hotel is the Pittsburgh Heritage trail. I loved my morning runs and felt very safe on this trail. 3 easy miles to PNC Park to route on our Buccos. I will be back, indeed.

Room Tip: Our room was overlooking an outside patio where there was live music on Friday night. Didn't bo...
