“O.K. Courtyard in the cultural district”
Reviewed September 7, 2013

Slightly tired facilities balanced by extremely helpful and engaging staff. Our room was laid out well, but had worn spots in the rug and actually creaked in certain areas like an old house. Location is pretty good - next to restaurants, bars and Ben & Jerry's. We used our Rewards certificates to pay, but published price was a little high - although we were there during the week when prices are generally higher for business travelers.

Did not try their restaurant, but had an extra Starbucks tea bag and brewed it with their hot water. Unfortunately, the water was stored in a container that previously held coffee, so my tea tasted like sludge. It's a small thing, but simple to fix (dedicated water urn) to delight customers.

The little grab 'n go section had a wide variety of drinks/snacks and helpful to have since a 7-11 was a few blocks away.

Room Tip: We were a little away from the elevator with no view (out the back), but it was quiet, which was key...

We always stay at the Courtyard when in Pittsburgh. Labor Day week-end was huge in town - Pirates games, class re-unions, Pitt Panthers, rib-fest, concerts – more than the usual. This property and most others downtown were sold out well in advance, with room rates shooting through the roof. With our usual expectations, we were all-in.

Without explanation, the Starbucks in the lobby was closed; blocked-off – no lobby coffee available. There was no hotel-provided downtown shuttle service mentioned in an earlier review. Valet parking was hopelessly understaffed at times. After leaving the hotel early in the morning, we were disappointed to see our room wasn't made up after three in the afternoon. Housekeeping did arrive promptly after we called. With the property full up, none of our loyalty program perks were available.

The property location is as-good-as-it-gets for enjoying everything downtown has to offer, within walking distance, including a short three blocks to the “T” station. We’ll be back again to the Courtyard and hope for a better experience next time.

I grew up in Pittsburgh; but moved away 13 years ago. I've stayed in hotels all over the world; so when it was time to book a weekend in my old city - it was a little weird. Lo and behold, a good price for a holiday weekend right in the heart of the city (the cultural district). Sold! The staff was above and beyond pleasant, helpful, and polite. The rooms were above average for sure with decor, space, and layout. I would totally recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Pittsburgh whether for work, a foodie weekend, Pirate game, or a small bachelorette party. Excellent!!

Room Tip: We stayed in a room facing the convention center which was cool because they have a grassy veranda w...

Made reservations for the FSU-Pitt game. The room is clean, up-to-date, (including a small fridge) and service very good. The location is great for sporting events as it is an easy walk to PNC Park or Heinz field. (To note: there are two Marriott Properties that are closer as they are on the North Side of the River. You have to decide how close you want to be to the traffic and hub-bub.) The property shows its age in both good ways and bad ways. The rooms are bigger (including the bath) but the floors actually creaked when I walked on them. There is a Starbucks on-site and a Ben & Jerry's across the street. One drawback of being downtown is that there is only valet parking.

Room Tip: The two elevators were sluggish and the view form inside the city is not much. A lower floor might...

Stayed three nights as tourists. It's a very convenient location. The rooms are still very nice. But re-reading my review from 2007, I realize the extra edge is not quite there any more. First off, so quaint that I loved the Ethernet cable Internet access in the room, with wireless in the lobby! Well, guess what . . . wireless everywhere, as expected these days. Worked OK.

We tried the "courtyard" off the third floor. It was set up nicely but very loud because of all the rooms' AC noise. Great idea; execution leaves a lot to be desired.

The breakfast offerings were certainly less elaborate this time. No "omelet to order"! Closest thing to cooked to order was two eggs with accoutrements. Pretty good, esp. the potato puffs or whatever they were. Breakfast sandwich was microwaved and about as good as you can get with that preparation.

I wavered between giving four stars and three stars. The room was fine, and the housekeeping was absolutely stellar! The valet service was once again quick and friendly. (But we tip well . . . ) My problem this time was the shuttle. We used it successfully a couple times the first two days. Then suddenly, when I called for a ride from Rivers Casino to the hotel (well within the geographical limits), they refused to send the shuttle because "there's a Pirates home game starting in the next hour and we don't like to get our shuttles involved in all that traffic." No notice of this, mind you, at the front desk or near the valet station that morning.

So! How was I to get back, I asked. "Oh, there are lots of taxis just outside the casino and you can get one of those." I asked if Marriott was going to pay for that taxi. "Oh, no, we have no obligation to pay for your taxi or other transportation." Uhhhhh, but you have an obligation to provide a complimentary shuttle! "Well, no, it's complimentary except when the traffic will be really bad."

So I took a cab -- cabbie knew the route to avoid all the traffic and he had me back to Courtyard in 10 minutes or so. Too bad MARK, who was the person on the other end of the line for the Marriott Shuttle, didn't know how to use the route my cabbie took and provide the guest service that was supposedly included in the room rate we paid.

I'd hesitate to stay at Courtyard again because their shuttle clearly cannot be counted on during baseball season. Or maybe also football season, 'cause isn't that stadium in the same area?? And maybe also hockey season? And is there a pro basketball team in Pittsburgh?

Whatever, seems like the Courtyard Downtown shuttle service is provided at the convenience of the drivers, not the guests. So I guess we'll perhaps find another place when we come again.

Room Tip: We checked in with another couple, asked for nearby rooms. They said "sure." So we ended u...

Dear wythany,
First, let me say I am glad to hear that you decided to return to our hotel and to downtown Pittsburgh for your travels. I trust the Steel City’s attractions didn’t let you down and I’m happy our smiling staff and deluxe guest rooms made your comfortable stay.

The Courtyard brand has been redesigned to offer an a la carte breakfasts in a bistro-style concept in order to provide a wider range of options and healthier selections. While this may mean no more “made-to-order omelets” it does mean made-to-order Starbucks and an array of ready-to-go items as well as your traditional breakfasts, French Toast and eggs any style.

I do want to address the misconception "sandwich was microwaved" in light of our guarantee of serving fresh quality food:

All sandwiches and their components are made fresh every morning before we open The Bistro. When a sandwich order is placed it is then toasted in a speed-oven. A speed-oven layers high speed forced air convection and infrared to deliver incredibly fast cooking times (15x faster than a traditional convection oven) while preserving the integrity of the food. A microwave does not reach temperatures of 500F-700F... It's straight from the Jetson's.

In regards to our shuttle. I am very sorry to hear we didn’t effectively communicate our availability. To maintain open availability for other guests, and maximize the time of our valets, we have to restrict trips to the stadiums on game days. A mile there and back can take upwards of 30 minutes immediately before or following a game. With the Steeler's season about to start, we have taken this as an opportunity to make sure this problem does not reoccur.

For prospective guests: PNC Park and Heinz Field/Casino are .6 and 1.3 miles away respectively. On game day we suggest walking. For one, it is a very scenic walk along the river and across the Roberto Clemente Bridge and the coolest way to experience the city on game-day. I personally love people watching and walking through the parking lots seeing all the tailgate parties. Secondly, it is by far the fastest way to get there, though we now have the light-rail North Side Connector, aka the T. You can ride the T for free from the Wood Street Station, 3 blocks from the hotel, and it will drop you off at either PNC Park or Heinz Field... Did I mention it is Free?!

I hope you reconsider your decision and join us again in the future, and appreciate wholeheartedly your praise of our rooms care and valet attendants for their hard work and dedication.

Kindest Regards,
Francisco Sellés, General Manager

We stayed one night while dropping our daughter at college. The room was big, quiet and comfy. Great hot shower, quick cool down from the AC (it was in the 80's and humid),and room to stretch out for 3 of us. The restaurant was busy and smelled wonderful, there were tables outside on the sidewalk if you wanted to sit there. We only had drinks from the bar....city prices but good ,well made drinks and fast service.Easy access to everything downtown...theaters, office buildings, parks, city visitors office, lots of parking garages and street lots close...most of downtown is within a 10 minute walk.Check in/out was fast and friendly. The most interesting thing was the fun facts book about Pittsburgh that was in our room. I learned more about Pittsburgh in 10 minutes reading this book....there is a lot we didn't know about this city.
