The Cathedral of Learning is a wonderful building to just wander around, but at Christmastime it is very special. Each classroom is decorated for the country it represents. Most of the decorations go back to the 1800's or earlier. Just beautiful.

Our family of 6 (kids 5-13) did a real quick stop on our way out of town, so didn't see as much as they probably had to offer. The views are great from on top. We walked the stairs down, which was fun ... despite having tight calves for the next couple days! There was a Hindu celebration of some sort while we were there which provided a nice cultural feel. The price was right!

Go early - it closes at 4:00pm. The Nations room are great and the inside is breath taking. If you like LOTR, the courtyard will remind you of Helms Deep. Elevators are real old, but worth the scare to get to the top. Wonderful! Kids, teenagers and 8 year old, loved to see what was next.

The University of Pittsburgh is home to the Cathedral of Learning. The building hosts over 20 nationality rooms that are unique and beautifully decorated.

If you love learning about history and other cultures like I do, the Cathedral's nationality rooms should be at the top of your Pittsburgh list! The rooms are housed in the beautiful Gothic tower, and each is decorated according to its country's quintessential style. India, Germany, Scotland, China, Armenia...the list goes on.

The Syrian-Lebanon room is impressive; it is the only one you aren't allowed to enter, as it is an actual room shipped from overseas. It is incredibly ornate. The Early American room has a secret passageway up a narrow set of stairs! Al the rooms are unique, and you really feel like you are in that country! The rooms are actually still used as classrooms by the University.

There are tours available, and at only $4 for adults, its a great way to spend 2-3 hours. The Cathedral also hosts various fairs/celebrations with music, food, and dance demonstrations throughout the year. Visiting during Christmas is particularly lovely.
